In 1853, the American fleet Perry arrived in Uraga and demanded that the Edo shogunate open the country. In response, the Shogunate signed a treaty of amity with the U.S. the following year, and Japan began its journey toward opening to the outside world. This marked the beginning of the "end of the Edo period. The subsequent period in Japan was marked by a variety of problems, including the exclusion of foreigners (expulsion of barbarians) movement and instability in the country. Due to these and other problems stemming from the opening of Japan to the outside world, the power of the shogunate rapidly wanes, and Japan undergoes the Meiji Restoration. The port area at the end of the Edo period and during the Meiji Restoration was one of the important places where the great events that shook Japan at that time took place. This exhibition looks back on the history of the Bakumatsu Restoration period through various events that were deeply connected to the port area and had a great impact on the history of Japan.
