I obtained a GC on an employment basis, but I re-entered the country twice during the GC process with an I-131 （ 2019, 2020 ).
On those occasions, I was taken to a separate room at the Honolulu airport and was only asked a few questions. The wait was long, about 45 minutes.

I think the reason it says that re-entry on I-131 is not guaranteed is because they sometimes do not allow applicants with special circumstances to re-enter the country at the water's edge.
If a person living a normal life cannot enter the country using I-131, I think the meaning of issuing this document itself would be lost.

I think $600 is a big expense, but if a family emergency happened and I could not return home immediately because of this, I would regret it.

You can look up the experience on the reddit and you will find that almost everyone has reentered with no problems.

I read somewhere that USCIS does not guarantee re-entry because immigration control is the purview of the CBP immigration officer, which is a separate department.

Congratulations on your marriage ！

My husband is also American and we applied for a green card in 2018 without the use of an attorney.
I also applied for an I-131 in case I didn't know when my green card would arrive and in case there was a family emergency in Japan, but at the time there was no additional fee if I submitted it with my other documents.

I will write about some of my feelings and experiences.

1) In my research, I heard that even if you have I-131, you will be sent to a different room at immigration, and that it is not always a guarantee of entry into the country.

When I was applying for a green card, I searched all over the Internet in both English and Japanese, and was at the mercy of the information on the Internet.
If I followed the instructions of USCIS, called USCIS if I had any questions, prepared my documents properly as specified, and answered the questions honestly at the interview, there was no problem at all.
By all means, please do your best to be confident and not be at the mercy of information.

2) My experience with my I-131 application
In my case, the timeline was as follows.
Nov 2018 ： All documents （ including I-131 ） were ready and submitted
Dec 2018 ： Biometrics instructions came in so I made an appointment at the USCIS Honolulu office in January for fingerprinting and photo June 2019 ： Interview instructions came in so I made an appointment at the USCIS Honolulu office in July
July 2019 ： Interview at the USCIS Honolulu office with my husband
July 2019 ： What a surprise, my green card and Advance Parole Travel Document arrived at the same time
So both Advance Parole and Green Card were approved at the same time, so we never had to use Advance Parole.

During the application process, I was worried about what would happen if there was any family emergency, but my husband said not to worry because if we had to leave the country due to family emergency, it would be considered for humanitarian reasons.
Fortunately, we did not have to return to Japan in an emergency during the application process, but I searched and found the following page.
