I also called the consulate and was told to remove my family registration before applying for a visa.
Then I thought about it and realized that removing one's family register is the same as renouncing one's nationality.
In other words, people born and raised in Japan don't have a piece of paper to prove their Japanese nationality.
The only proof that you are Japanese is your family register.
The family register department at the government office has no way of knowing that I became an American citizen unless I notify them, and I haven't removed my family register, so it must still be there.
I think that if I have a family register, it means I have a nationality.
Of course I know that Japan does not recognize dual citizenship.

So, back to the question, did you remove your family register to get the visa?
I guess it is correct to say that I did not.
I did not remove my family register because I was still attached to Japan, and I felt that my identity was there.
Also, there was a possibility in my mind that I might return to Japan in the future.
I have heard that the procedure of living in Japan will go more smoothly if I have my family register in order. Anyway, I'll leave my family register as it is for now and hope that Japan will soon accept American travelers without visa like before.

The PCR test was done at Kapiolani at 8:30 Saturday morning and the results were emailed to me Sunday morning.

I returned home temporarily in the summer for my children's summer vacation. I had a negative certificate issued by St. Luke's.
We were on a Haneda flight, but once you arrive in Japan, you will be asked several times at the airport to confirm your travel documents, etc. I recommend that you keep all the necessary documents in a file case so that you can get them out quickly. There will also be an inspection for an app to check your whereabouts during your voluntary quarantine in Japan, so don't forget to download the necessary app. And since you will be forced to walk endlessly from inspection area to inspection area at the airport, it is best to keep your carry-on luggage as light as possible. We packed our carry-on luggage in carry-on cases and let the children carry them, while I prepared the necessary documents, cell phones, passports, etc. for the number of people in our party. It took about three and a half hours from the time we arrived at the airport to the time we met the family who would pick us up. You still need negative proof when you return to Hawaii, and you will be issued a Hawaii state form at a Hawaii state-designated clinic. I heard that lawn clinics in Tokyo are cheaper, but since my parents live in a rural area, I decided to go to a local Hawaii state-designated clinic since it was cheaper for me to go to Tokyo and stay at a local clinic considering the transportation and lodging costs. It was a big expense since it was 32,000 yen per person and it was for my family, but I couldn't go back last year and I am glad I took the plunge. On the way back, the airline staff we used at Haneda checked our negative certificates, and we were able to get out of the Honolulu airport easily and crisply, faster than normal, just by showing our boarding passes to the staff at the airport.

If you have a negative certificate designated by the State of Hawaii, there is no voluntary quarantine once you arrive in Hawaii, but it is recommended that you keep a copy of your negative certificate for travel at work or school for a while instead of throwing it away.

Yes, you cannot automatically relinquish your permanent residence when your GC expires.

To abandon, you must file Form I-407 with USCIS and have a final tax return as a U.S. resident.

Even if you have permanent resident status, you cannot enter the U.S. if your GC has expired or if you stay outside the U.S. longer than the term of your permit.

A long time ago, after taking up permanent residence, a person who had lived in Japan for 25 years tried to go to the US under ESTA and was not allowed on the plane.
