As I do every year, I called my accountant in March to make an appointment to apply for a tax return just in time for April this year, and he said that although there were no appointments available at the moment, it was okay because the appointment had been postponed until May 17 this year due to the pandemic, so I made an appointment in early May and went!

Then the other day I received a letter from the tax office charging me for overdue taxes. I was surprised and rushed to check and found that Federal was postponed until May 17, but State's deadline was April 20 ！

Of course I knew it was usually April 15. Of course, I knew that the usual deadline is April 15, but I had no doubt that it could be irregular due to the pandemic ？ and I am responsible for taking the accountant's word for it, but I trusted him completely as he is a Japanese man who has been our client for several years and is a professional. I trusted him completely.

When I told this to the accountant, he was apparently "convinced" that I would have to pay a penalty and accepted the appointment in May. My husband was introduced to this person by an acquaintance, and we have been using him for several years, but he is not a very nice person, his fees go up every year, and from our point of view, if we had known from the beginning, there is no reason or benefit to paying a penalty to have him. There is no advantage whatsoever.

Finally, he yelled at me on the phone and was very upset, but that didn't mean he would pay the penalty on my behalf...

He said he wants to reduce the number of clients because he is a one-man operation and can't handle it, and that he doesn't know if he will do it next year. He said every year that he was not sure if he would do it next year, and that he was not sure if he would be able to do it next year. ！
