Thank you for the detailed explanation of the Japanese passport.

However, since you can buy a rail pass with a Japanese passport under certain conditions
again, my guess is that if you have a pass voucher,
the staff at the rail pass issuing office will only check if you are who you say you are.

Conversely, I'm not sure if the agent has the authority to check whether you entered the country legally or not.

Nationality Act Article 11 A Japanese citizen shall lose Japanese nationality if he/she acquires the nationality of a foreign country at his/her own volition.

Article 18 of the Passport Act A passport shall lose its validity if it falls under any of the following items.
(i) If the holder of the passport dies or loses Japanese nationality.

Article 23 of the Passport Act Any person who falls under any of the following items shall be punished by imprisonment with work for not more than five years or a fine of not more than three million yen, or both.
(i) Any person who has obtained a passport or travel document pertaining to an application or request under this Act by making a false statement in a document concerning such application or request or by any other wrongful act
(vii) Any person who has exercised a passport or travel document which has lost its validity

There are some people here in Bibi who use two passports even though there is such a law. Before that, I don't understand,

Does this Japanese law also work for foreign nationals visiting Japan? In other words, can the law in #1998 be enforced against non-Japanese nationals visiting Japan? Consul General of Japan, please find out and post it here.

At the Japan Rail Pass exchange counter, you will be asked to fill out a simple application form and present the stamp/seal of the Temporary Visitor's Stamp/Seal that was stamped on your passport when you entered Japan. You must present your passport and the stamp/seal ／ to be examined for the Rail Pass exchange.


It is not possible to cut corners at the exchange, as they only need to verify your identity.
