Once crabgrass gets big, it takes the strength of a burly man to pull it out. As an elderly woman, I usually give up after about ten tries. When I go for a walk, I see spots where the lawn has lost the battle to crabgrass and looks absolutely miserable, but I suppose I just have to ignore it. I guess the only option is to use herbicide. I sprayed some on the crabgrass, but the surrounding grass died too. It really does work. Since I’m retired, I’m just pulling them out little by little.

I heard she was 75. Well, I suppose that’s a natural end to her life, but I was still a little shocked to hear the sad news.

It’s been a while.

I’m one of the Baikinmen.

It’s been extremely hot here in the San Fernando Valley lately.

Temperatures are over 90°F （ 32°C), so it’s hot. Well, since the humidity is relatively low,

even though the sun is intense, I can still manage to get by while walking.

I went for a walk this morning as well, but I didn’t see anyone except for the older woman who always goes for a walk twice a day

There are various ways to visit the 88 Sacred Sites of Shikoku. Options include sightseeing buses and private cars, but if you want to rely on your own physical strength, you can choose to travel by bicycle (typically a road bike) or on foot, relying solely on your own two feet.

In my case, back in 2009, a friend I’d known since high school in Japan sent me a TV program about “Ohenro”—the pilgrimage to walk the Shikoku 88 Sacred Sites.

The moment I saw it, I thought, “I want to go to Shikoku.”

Next time, I’ll talk about what it was about Shikoku that drew me in.

I may have mentioned this before, but I was born exactly one year before Japan’s War-Ending Day (or, more accurately, Defeat Day) in Kami-Isshiki-cho, Edogawa Ward, on the eastern outskirts of Tokyo.

On the eastern side of Edogawa Ward, the Edogawa River flows into Tokyo Bay, and Chiba Prefecture lies on the opposite bank of the river.

Public elementary and junior high schools back then didn’t have swimming pools, so when I wanted to swim during summer vacation, I would sometimes walk about 45 minutes under the scorching sun to the Edogawa River to swim.

If you go upstream along the Edogawa River, you’ll reach Katsushika Ward, where you’ll find “Shibamata Taishakuten”—a temple familiar from the “Tora-san” movies and commonly called “Taishaku-sama”—which I’ve visited several times for New Year’s prayers and other occasions.

Also, near there on the Edogawa River is the “Yagiri Ferry,” made famous by Takashi Hosokawa’s song, I once took the ferry from the Chiba Prefecture side and disembarked on the Tokyo side, paid my respects at Shibamata Taishakuten, walked down the street where Torasan’s shop is located in the movies, and then headed toward central Tokyo from Shibamata Station on the Keisei Kanamachi Line.

By the way, I didn’t spot “German Steel Helmet” anywhere. ^^

Long ago, "Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi)" walked this route as part of his spiritual training, and today we follow in his footsteps. However, there are no restrictions on how you travel the route—you may go on foot, by car, or by any other means.

With the exception of two or three temples, most of them belong to the Jōdo Shinshū sect, but there are no religious restrictions for those making the pilgrimage.

Furthermore, each temple hopes to welcome thousands upon thousands of visitors and receive their offerings.

Furthermore, the number of pilgrims from abroad has been steadily increasing over the past few decades. Although I am now a U.S. citizen, I’ve only met two pilgrims from the U.S. here. For some reason, there seem to be a lot of people coming from Europe.

There are countless motorcycle enthusiasts who ride with the factory-standard muffler still in place. When I was in Japan, I used to ride a Honda—I think it was a 250cc or a 125cc. It must have been around that time that I saw the title of the Western movie *Easy Rider* and simply found myself longing to ride one of those choppers (a Harley with extended front forks) through the vast California desert.

So, the company I was working for at the time had a U.S. branch in New York. As business kept booming, they needed a West Coast branch, and luckily, I was chosen to be stationed in New York. Six months after completing my training, I came to LA, rented a corner of a sales rep’s warehouse, and set up the Western Branch.

Well, “opening a West Coast branch” might sound cool, but at first, I was just busy killing time in a corner of a huge warehouse where the AC didn’t work very well—inspecting products before shipment and occasionally repairing returned items. Oh, that’s right—I had so much free time that I’d often head over to the air-conditioned office and hang out with the ladies there. That went on for over half a year, so my English improved quite a bit.

Oh, oops—I was talking about how my motorcycle’s exhaust was “loud,” wasn’t I? I’ll continue that next time...

I live in Discovery Bay ！
When it gets hot, the thermometer sometimes reads 140, but since that’s in Fahrenheit, I don’t think it’s as hot as it is in Japan.

Everyone, have you ever heard of a restaurant called “Kyushu Ramen”?

I think only people who lived here in the Valley\ (San Fernando Valley), but back then, the only Japanese restaurant in the Valley was “Benihana,” famous for its teppanyaki. That restaurant catered primarily to long-time American residents, mostly white people.

I was initially sent to this Valley as an expatriate employee of a Japanese company, and but the Japanese restaurants back then were filled almost exclusively with white and Latino customers. The menus focused on tempura ・, teriyaki ・, and sushi, and to me, the taste was so bad I’d think, “What is this?”—it was simply inedible.

So whenever I wanted to eat authentic Japanese food, I had to drive down the freeway all the way to Little Tokyo downtown.

A few years later, “Kyushu Ramen,” the first ramen shop in the Valley run by Japanese people, opened. Well, the taste wasn’t quite what I’d expected, but since there were no other ramen shops that “really” served ramen, I went there about once a week.

Also around that time, there was a Japanese celebrity’s U.S. office （—just a single-family home ）—in this valley, and it seems that celebrities who were frequently seen on Japanese TV at the time would often come by. Then, one time while I was slurping ramen at the aforementioned “Kyushu Ramen,” Namie Amuro—who was popular at the time—walked in with her local agent and sat down at the table next to mine, with her back to me. Well, I’m not a fan of hers or anything; I just wanted to mention that it happened.

I can log in through the Yahoo website and check my email there, but it doesn't seem to sync with the Mail app on my iPhone ？—the one that comes pre-installed on the iPhone. I'm thinking ？ that there might be some restrictions because I live overseas.
I’m busy today, so I’m thinking of stopping by the Apple Store tomorrow, but since it’s a Japanese Yahoo Mail account, I’m worried they might not be able to resolve the issue.

As Ko-ji-san mentioned, I tried disabling access from overseas yesterday, but it didn't work.
Today, I received helpful advice at the Apple Store, and we tried all sorts of solutions, but we couldn’t resolve the issue. For now, they set up a bookmark for Yahoo! Japan Mail, and I’ve been opening it from there. Although I’ve saved my password and other information on my smartphone, I have to go through text verification every time I open it, which is a hassle.
The Apple representative told me to try opening it again from the iPhone Mail app after a while—they said there’s a chance it might start working for some reason, but they couldn’t say for sure. They mentioned that this kind of thing happens from time to time.
I imagine there are many people living overseas who use the Yahoo! Japan Mail service—has anyone else been affected by this?

I think it's a good idea to go to the local police station in the city where the incident occurred.

I’ve been bored lately, so I’ve been answering calls from strangers on my cell phone, but there are so many scams.

Someone claiming to be from Citi Bank asked if I had authorized some suspicious account activity. I checked my credit card statement on my computer and saw nothing unusual, so I hung up.

I received a call from US Bank $ asking if I’d bought a firearm for 9,000, and I told them to “go to hell.” When I looked up the phone number, it was listed as US Bank, but it was also listed as a number used by scammers. There was even a fake US Bank website linked to this scam number.

I also got a call from Bank of America about suspicious activity, but I happened to have my son take the call, and he yelled, “What do you want? Get to the point—what do you want?”

Here’s a follow-up.
Immediately after realizing I’d been scammed, I called CITIBANK to explain the situation, and the $420 that had been fraudulently taken via Zelle was placed under dispute.
After that, I opened a new account, and since my new ATM/debit card arrived today, I activated it right away. When I checked my account activity online, I saw that the $420 had been refunded. ！ I was a little moved. I’m really impressed by CITIBANK’s prompt response.

If a call comes from a number I don’t recognize, I “absolutely” never answer it.

Friends I already know ・ acquaintances, or financial institutions ・ or business contacts—are already saved in my phone. When they call, their specific names appear on the screen, so if a call comes in without that name displayed, I absolutely never press the answer button.

If the display shows only a phone number, I completely ignore it and leave it alone until the ring stops.

Since scammers make calls automatically using computers, it seems that if there’s no answer after a few attempts, the system automatically deletes the number.
