I haven't been back home for a few years, so this may not be much help. when I returned in 2015, I used a Telecom Square voice SIM, which was cheaper because ANA offered free per day usage. when I checked on the web, I found that a lot has changed in Corona. I checked on the web and it seems to have changed a lot in Corona. Nowadays, there are docomo and Softbank for voice SIM （ that gives you a Japanese mobile number ）, but Softbank seems to be a good choice for short term. Prepaid SIMs sold on Amazon and other places are usually data-only, so unless you use LINE or Skype to make calls, it may be a hassle to call people in Japan. The following are not available unless you have a visa to stay in Japan, etc.

Counter at departure from the U.S. ：
If you have a one-way ticket, you can only check-in with a Japanese passport.
If it is a round-trip ticket and stay within 90 days, either Japanese or U.S. passport can be used.
There is no problem even if the passport presented at the counter and the passport for entry into Japan are different.

Either passport can be used for entry into Japan ：
If the stay is less than 90 days, either passport is acceptable.
If you need to renew your Japanese passport or get a stamp of entry for overseas traveler insurance while in Japan,
or stay longer than 90 days, enter with a Japanese passport.
If you use a U.S. embassy or consulate, duty free store, or rail pass, enter with a U.S. passport.
It does not matter if the passport presented at the U.S. airline counter is different from the passport used to enter Japan

it is unclear where you went.

The passport presented at the airline counter and the passport for entry into and exit from Japan and the U.S. may be different
but the passports presented to the Japanese inspector must be the same for entry and exit.

I know this is a long and tiresome process, but as you can see, you can only enter Japan with a "Corona Disaster".
