I also rent wifi from Rakuten in Japan every time. They deliver to my accommodation and I can return it at the airport post on the way back. When I need to make a phone call, I use a public phone. You don't see many public phones these days, but you can search NTT to find the nearest public phone location. You can also use the goo disaster prevention app to find the location of a pay phone.

I will stay in Japan for a short period of time using a SIM card.

I have arranged for it to be delivered to my home after I return to Japan.

I can't use my mobile number, but I can use Wifi outside my home.

If you stay less than 1 month, pocket Wifi is useful because it is heavy.

What I have done in the last few times is

1. buy a data SIM card for Japan from Amazon in the US
2. buy a data SIM card for Japan from Amazon in Japan and send it to a family member, who will mail it to me

Both 1 and 2, call If I need to talk, I will do it via data with an app.
The trip was 2 weeks, so not a lot of data.

1. has the advantage that you can buy it here, but it is more expensive per data.
2. has the advantage that you can buy a SIM card at a reasonable price by taking advantage of the weak yen, but there is a hassle of having it sent from Japan.
In my case, I bought it 1-1 month before my trip by regular mail ・ and had it sent to me.

In both cases, I replaced the card on the plane to Japan and was able to connect to the internet as soon as I arrived at the airport.

My phone is the type that only allows one SIM card to be inserted,
so when I switch to a Japanese data SIM card, my Hawaii number is disconnected.
Also, you will not get a Japanese phone number.
Other than that, as you said, you will be able to connect to the internet and make calls on LINE and Messanger.
In addition, by inserting a SIM card here when you come back to the U.S., you will be able to use U.S. numbers.

However, if you have a phone with two SIM cards, or if you have an eSIM and a physical SIM card that can support dual SIM,
you may still be able to use your US phone number while in Japan.
This is because some carriers allow you to make and receive calls ・ and texts over WiFi, and some plans allow you to make and receive calls
and texts abroad ・ for an additional fee.

If you prefer to use your US phone number in Japan as well,
