I still have one with an expiration date of "13 APR 1998".

There is a " VOID " punched out on the page with my photo, so

it must have been punched out at the consulate or somewhere. No, it wasn't.

When I visited the National Pension Service office when I was on vacation in Japan to ensure that my pension was routed from Japan

the office punched a hole in my VOID to invalidate my Japanese passport.

However, that passport was securely returned to my hands. So I still have it with me as a memento.
