There is a difference between a house built about 60 years ago and a gas heating system built and installed 10-20 years ago.

I replaced my 50 Galon Gas Water Heater by myself a few years ago, but the pilot light was very different from the old one, so it was very hard to see and I had to call the gas company to check.

Turning on and off the pilot of a gas heater is easy
There are usually instructions on the heater
When you turn it off, you can easily find the main gas valve, which we all know will turn off the main gas supply and turn off by itself.
When on, even if you open the main valve, no gas will be supplied unless the pilot is lit and heat is generated
This design prevents gas from being left on if the pilot is turned off by wind or other causes
When on, open the gas valve and press the push button at the end of the pipe connected to the pilot. When it is on, the gas is supplied to the pilot by opening the gas tap and pressing the push button at the end of the pipe that is connected to the pilot.
