The true "northern tip" of the Japanese archipelago is Cape Soya in Wakkanai. I mentioned earlier that I went to Hakodate when the Tohoku Shinkansen was limited to Hachinohe Station, and after sightseeing in Hakodate, I crossed the Tsugaru Straits by ferry from Hakodate Port to Oma-zaki, the true "northern tip" of Honshu on the ax-shaped Shimokita Peninsula. I remembered the news of the sinking of the ferry "Toya Maru" in the Tsugaru Straits in the early postwar period, which claimed more than 1,000 lives.

＞ We crossed the Tsugaru Straits by ferry to Ohma-zaki, the "northern outskirts"


On this trip, we took a bus from Ohma port and stayed overnight at a place called Shimoburo Onsenkyo, about 20 km along the coast on Route 279.

As you can see on the map, this place is also very remote and not prosperous at all, especially in summer. There are two reinforced concrete multi-story hotels along the national highway, but the rest are all minshuku-sized inns. We stayed at one of them, but the indoor bath, which was supposed to be a hot spring, was smaller than those in public bathhouses anywhere in Tokyo, and it was extremely hot in the evening when the sun was still high. So we opened the cold water tap to dilute the water, but even after 15 minutes, the water was not diluted enough. In the end, I was in the bath for a few minutes while it was still sizzling hot, but I couldn't stand it and got out.

I left there the next day not knowing what I had come to Hot Springs Village for. The bus continued south on Route 279 to Shimokita Station on the JR Ominato Line in Mutsu City. On the way there, we saw a signpost on the right that said "Osorezan" (Mt. Osorezan), and regretted that we had wanted to visit Mt. Either way, it was well worth it just to be able to visit that axe-shaped peninsula at the northernmost tip of Honshu, which I had been familiar with seeing on maps since elementary school. After this, we left the Ominato Line and entered the Tohoku Line at Nobechi, heading for Aomori Station again. From Aomori Station, we took a bus to Lake Towada in Towada-Hachimantai National Park.
