しかし、「タイは物価が安く、日本より優雅な生活ができる」という空想の夢物語は、数年前のお話。今、タイでは物価が高騰し国民生活を直撃、大きな問題となっている。
特にバンコクは深刻で、想像以上に激しい物価高騰で年金生活者の日本人高齢者は生活難に陥り、「リタイアリッチ」の夢は「リタイアプア」の現実に取って代わった。
日本を去らざる得ない理由があったり、リタイアリッチを豪語して日本を去った手前、今更日本にも帰れず、夢打ち砕かれ、身寄りのない異国で孤独死するケースも珍しくなくなってきた。
そもそも物価高騰の最大の原因は、2012年、インラック政権（当時）が実施した最低賃金の引き上げ。人件費高騰に伴い、物価も急上昇した。また、日本人の場合、昨今の円安傾向が状況をさらに悪化させている。
例えば、バンコクでラーメンを注文した場合、数年前であれば200バーツ（約700円）ぐらいだったのが、今では300から400バーツ（約1000円から約1300円）と、2倍近くにまで跳ね上がっている。
