Counter at departure from the U.S. ：
If you have a one-way ticket, you can only check-in with a Japanese passport.
If it is a round-trip ticket and stay within 90 days, either Japanese or U.S. passport can be used.
There is no problem even if the passport presented at the counter and the passport for entry into Japan are different.

Either passport can be used for entry into Japan ：
If the stay is less than 90 days, either passport is acceptable.
If you need to renew your Japanese passport or get a stamp of entry for overseas traveler insurance while in Japan,
or stay longer than 90 days, enter with a Japanese passport.
If you use a U.S. embassy or consulate, duty free store, or rail pass, enter with a U.S. passport.
It does not matter if the passport presented at the U.S. airline counter is different from the passport used to enter Japan
.

The passport presented at the airline counter and the passport for entry into and exit from Japan and the U.S. may be different
but the passports presented to the Japanese inspector must be the same for entry and exit.
