I am not gonna say LA is rural. LA is semi-urban imo. 昔は巨大な田舎って言われてました。

ヨーロッパとの距離は関係ないでしょ。
LA はやたら土地が広く元はど砂漠だったので開発時代は高層ビルで縦に伸びるのではなく経済性の高い方法で横へ、横へ、と広がっていったのが原因だと私は推測します。それにより東京、NY、シカゴのように一極に集中した大都会にはなりませんでした。
それが故ダウンタウンの高層ビル街もビジネスが中心で人が楽しみで集まるという場所ではありません。さらに住宅街は中心から各方向に1時間ドライブしても続いており、買い物や外食など日常のほとんどの用事はその地区のモールあたりで済んでしまいます。
東京生まれの私自身も初めての外国が NY で NYC の生活が慣れた頃に LA 赴任となりました。飛行機から見る光景は雪をかぶった Big Bear を過ぎると San Bernardino の町で、低い建物の住宅街とフリーウェイが LAX まで限りなく続くように見え、ある意味「都落ち」した気分にもなりました。
LA の生活に入るとラヂオからは America の 'Ventura Haghway' Arlo Guthrie の 'The City of New Orleans' などが流れ、テレビを点けると Johnny Cash や Glen Campbell のカントリーソング番組が人気を博していて、いやがうえにも、自分の LA 生活の BGM になっていました。

サウス・ベイってWestside に比べるとメチャ田舎だよね。

車が無いと生活出来ないから田舎でしょう。日本だって都会なら
公共の交通機関が発達してるから
車はいらない。でも、地方に行ったら必要。アメリカでもニューヨークの真ん中(マンハッタン)なら
車はいらない。
