My wife and I missed the Black Friday sales that would have been available on airlines other than SQ, but I'm looking at hers for April. My wife wants to fly Japanese airlines if possible, but both ANA and JAL are sharing with US-based UA or AA at least one way for around $750 for a one way flight to and from Japan.

My wife doesn't have a language problem, but she is concerned about what kind of food will be served on a US airline. I guess the food on U.S.-based flights is unique to their own company as it is on other international flights. I used to fly Delta to Japan often, but even on economy flights to Japan, the food was either beef or chicken, which I liked but didn't care for.

Overseas Travel Insurance" from here

Do you buy "Overseas Travel Insurance" each time you travel to Japan from here, except for those who still have their residence address in Japan and are covered by medical insurance in Japan?

In my case, my local insurance is Kaiser's very standard plan ＋ Medicare, which only pays for emergency treatment in case of sudden illness or traffic accident abroad. Therefore, if I need major surgery or other help to get to the airport, I have to buy an expensive one-way ticket to come back here, because I have the cheapest ticket.

For decades, I have not bought "travel insurance" as long as I am healthy and take care of myself and don't get in a car accident. If I had to say so, when I went by Delta, I paid about $70 per trip for life insurance for a small plane accident and the cost of changes in case of flight delays, cancellations, etc. at the time of purchase of the reservation.

Do any of you buy "travel insurance" on a case-by-case basis? If so, what kind and how much do you pay for it?

The Blue Cross that I am in had two hospitals that are available in Japan.
My aunt who lives in the U.S. was injured in Taiwan the other day and was treated at a hospital that Blue Cross can use.
So, I don't have overseas insurance.

I would buy one every time. The uncertainty of what kind of accident or illness I might get makes me do it. On my last trip to Japan, it was ＄ 98 for the two of us. It's not that much to worry about and it helps just to remove the extra worry from my mind. Included are accidental death, stolen baggage, accident and illness, evacuation of mortal remains, trip interruption, worldwide travel assistance.
