In what specific situations do you feel this? I don't use Line, but I use Skype to call Japanese landlines and cell phones quite often. I guess both Line and Skype use the same IP telephony (VoIP, Voice over Internet Protocol) method, which is data transmission through both ends of the call.

Therefore, if you don't get your own phone number from Line/Skype, you can't make a call to yourself if the other party has a landline. I think you already know that. Therefore, business calls and faxes will be interfered with.

I don't know what else IP phones can't do.

I have ＄ 10th place credit on Skype and use it for international calls to Japan and when I go back to Japan temporarily. I have a US Skype account, so if I make a call from Japan to a landline or cell phone in Japan via Skype, I am charged for the US outgoing call, but it's a small fee. I have not obtained a Skype number, so the other party cannot call me, but I have no problem making outgoing calls from here. If you have the app on your phone, you can call from anywhere you have internet access.
