If you are returning to Japan to care for your parents without setting a time limit and then returning to the U.S. again, I think it would be best to first obtain U.S. citizenship and then stay in Japan with a permanent residence permit, as recommended by Showa Ototsuan. I am a citizenship holder （ I became a citizen about 15 years ago ） but I returned to Japan about 10 years ago for the purpose of returning permanently. I remember that I did all the procedures by myself and it was not so difficult. However, after 4 years, I decided that I could not live in Japan and came back to the US. （ I now live in Hawaii ）
From my experience, I believe that Japanese immigration control is kinder to "ex-Japanese" and not as strict as the US green card system. I think it is advantageous for U.S. citizens to travel between Japan and the U.S. in situations where the length of stay is not very predictable. However, it depends on when you return to Japan, and whether you will be able to obtain citizenship by then. I was frustrated because if my child did not have a blood test, it would have been a few dollars for a 2 year old check up, but ＄ it was 90. I had visited this pediatrician many times for other than the usual checkups, but I was not prepared for this because they always ＄ never charged more than 20. If I thought for sure it should be expensive ＄ 90 might have seemed cheap.
And the allergy test was for me, not the child, and I have not yet received a bill for it. So it may be a test that is not covered by insurance ！ I will call my doctor and check before I wait for the bill ！

I used to enjoy traveling with miles as a UNITED miles member, but in the last couple of decades, because it costs a lot of miles and there are restrictions on the airlines you can use, I have a card that comes with CAPITAL ONE travel credit, and each time I take a ticket on an airline of my choice and I get cash back in miles.
