I wrote #20 about 10 years ago because the TV news reported such a sad accident.

Indeed, modern refrigerators can be opened by pushing the door from inside.

However, since small children play around outside they might freak out if they are locked in a dark cabinet, and

my grandson has grown up and started to go to UC this fall. I was worried about what would happen to me if he died in such an accident when he was little.

I used to say to myself, "Wrap the door of the refrigerator to be disposed of with rope or tape to prevent it from opening before putting it outside.

We have a big, modern refrigerator that is the mainstay of our house, but we also have another refrigerator, I don't know how old, that we keep in the garage as a backup.

The day before yesterday, I opened the door and there was a foul smell. It had been out of order since the day before. I moved what little food I could save to the new one and disposed of everything that would have gone bad with the Gabage Disposer.

Then I called the City of LA and asked them to come pick it up. The city manager instructed me to remove the door or wrap it with tape, etc. before taking it outside. I guess this is to prevent accidents from happening with small children playing inside.

I had asked my second son to take the very heavy refrigerator out of the garage and onto the sidewalk, and

while I was gone, he took it out onto the sidewalk. And since the door side is snugly attached to a lamppost on a concrete pole,

even a big man can't open the door. The purpose has been accomplished. That's my son.

The city trucks will just come tomorrow.

The city manager will not say anything about when to put the refrigerator out on the street outside to be taken away. But they won't come on weekends, so anytime after 8 am on weekdays would be fine.

About 10 years ago, we bought an old two-door refrigerator that had been on the market for sale because a student who had studied in Japan wanted to get rid of it when he returned home. The refrigerator in the garage broke down and we asked City of LA to bring it back to us as mentioned above.

Until then, we used to cut watermelons and other large items in half and refrigerate them in their refrigerator, but it was very inconvenient when the refrigerator was out of service. Today I was lucky enough to find a house for sale nearby, with a good-sized refrigerator sitting in the open garage, ready to be seen.

I asked the homeowner about it and he said it was something he wanted to get rid of. I asked him, "Well, can I have this?" and he said, "Dozo, dozo," and I used my hand truck to carry it to his garage. Now I can gobble up cold watermelon again as much as I want. My wife was also very happy to have another place to chill some bottles of fine wine that she had received from other people.
