College Avenue near Campus is popular among students with many apartments.
The area along College Ave. to Rockridge is relatively safe.

Basically, the closer you are to Oakland and Richmond, the more careful you should be.
Roughly speaking, South Berkeley is the area following Oakland, and North Berkeley (Berkeley Hills) is a safe residential area.
UC Berkeley is positioned as Central Berkeley.
The area near San Pablo Boulevard, especially on its west side, is not recommended.
Telegraph is the main street from Central Berkeley to Oakland.
Orinda, Lafayette, and Walnut Creek are safe, upscale neighborhoods, but may be inconvenient to get to BART without a car.
If you are thinking of the El Cerrito side, the El Cerrito Plaza station is safer and more convenient.
