I was in the same situation as midori and got a GC for my 20 year old daughter. I took citizenship and sponsored her. If you and your son have no problems, I think you will be able to get it smoothly in the next 5 years or so.

I know someone who had problems and could not get it. I know someone who was denied a GC because he had a history of working illegally and they found out about it.
