It’s been a while. I’m in my late senior years, but I still have something to do every day.

Or maybe not—I attend a senior class at LA Fitness twice a week, and I also go to a yoga class at the city’s senior center once a week. Neither of these has anything to do with the Japanese community. Since LA Fitness is privately owned, I pay a membership fee, but the yoga class is at a senior center run by the City of Los Angeles, so it’s free.

On days when I don’t drive anywhere, I go for a walk around my neighborhood—which has some ups and downs—for about an hour.

This has nothing to do with building physical strength, but at the city senior center mentioned above, I can get a free lunch every weekday. It’s not at all to my Japanese taste, but since it’s free, I’m happy to eat it. They include a packet of salt on the side, so if I sprinkle a little over the whole thing, I can eat it without any trouble. A survival tactic for a stingy Japanese person.

At the command of the Mountain Goddess, my entire PC setup was moved from my room to a room that had been “tacked on” to the back yard.

Both the ceiling/roof and the exterior walls of this room are made of flimsy materials, so here in the San Fernando Valley, it gets unbearably hot or cold unless I run the portable air conditioner at full blast.

I’m writing this right now in that room. The temperature is already 76°F/24°C. I can still manage without the AC on yet, but turning it on will be essential this afternoon.

While browsing the internet, I stumbled upon ・ The Ventures’ ♪ “Walk Don’t Run” ♪.

That brings back memories—apparently it was a hit in 1964. I think I was in high school back then. A show called “Electric Guitar Battle” was really popular on TV, and I used to be glued to it. But just watching wasn’t enough—I ended up going to a record&music store and buying the cheapest electric guitar that was all the rage at the time.

An electric guitar requires an amp (with a speaker), but I didn’t have enough allowance for one. Since I already had two DIY tube mono amps, I repurposed those instead.

The intro starts in A minor, and I kept repeating “ja-ja-jan, ja-ja-jan, ja-ja-jaaan” over and over, trying to memorize it.

The current temperature in the shade outside my house is 82°F (28°C).

82°F is on the cooler side; when it gets hot, it can sometimes exceed 100°F.

Well, here in inland LA, the temperatures are high, but the humidity is low, so it’s manageable to be outside.

Today, I was digging up the ground in the backyard to pull weeds. The type of weed is called crabgrass—it’s the toughest kind.

If I didn’t have ornamental plants growing there, I’d spray it with a powerful herbicide specifically designed for this weed, but I can’t do that.

I could hire a gardener, but since I’m retired and have all the time in the world, I should just take care of the yard myself—but I’m lazy at heart, so that doesn’t work out either.

You mentioned that your dog almost trips—what kind of leash do you use? ？
Even though they’re considered small, French Bulldogs are actually quite strong, aren’t they? I recommend a shorter rope leash.
My dog weighs 18 kilograms, but since he doesn’t like other dogs, he sometimes pulls suddenly when we’re out for a walk.
Things have gotten a lot easier since I switched to a rope leash.
Rope leashes come in various thicknesses and lengths, so I think it’s worth trying a few out.

I was a private guide with both Vima Travel and Rocotavi until a few years ago. I knew for sure there would be a certain number of clients who would report to the authorities. I was in the immigration line for 2 hours when I came back in Feb. As a GC holder, I am usually instructed to stand in the US passport line with my US citizen family members, but this time I was instructed to stand in the tourist line with my family members because of the new rules. So all the US Passport family members stood in the tourist line with me for 2 hours.

When my turn finally came, all of my US citizen family members were sent to a separate room with me, and they were also inconvenienced. I have a feeling that even if I apply for Global Entry, it will be rejected because of my history of visa denial decades ago.

I used to be sent to a separate room every time, so I got a redress number, and after getting the number, I don't have to be sent to a separate room anymore, but this time, the officer at the counter happened to be new, and all my family members were exhausted after being sent to a separate room for a long time.

I want to get global entry, but I think I will fail in the screening process, so I have given up on MPC for now ….

I returned to Hawaii from Japan last week.
This was my first
airport immigration since getting Global Entry.
The tourist lanes were not as long as in October, but
the Global Entry lanes were
the smoothest I have ever seen.
I was glad I got Global Entry.

This year, I flew back to Hawaii on ANA. Since I arrived at 8:00 a.m., there was no one in line.

Last time, I flew JAL and arrived after 9:00 a.m., so I had to wait in line for nearly an hour at Honolulu Airport without a Global Entry card.

I think if I continue flying ANA, I probably won’t need Global Entry.

Since you can’t use kanji with your husband’s last name, you’re planning to use the same last name as your Japanese mother, right?
I think it’ll be fine because they’ll add your husband’s last name in parentheses on your Japanese passport, but the names won’t match, will they?
If I use that example name for my child’s Japanese name, I believe it will be registered in the family register as Yamada Hanako Rei. We’ll list it as Hanako Rei on official documents, but if we end up living in Japan, we’ll let people call her either Hanako or Rei—whichever they prefer.
The passport is written entirely in Roman letters as Yamda(Smith) Lei Hanako.
I’m curious how others in international marriages have handled this, but I think the best thing to do is consult with the Japanese consulate.

I am paying $80 for above service once a month. But I do vacuum. I also detail cleaning by myself. Cleaning lady spends total 2 hours which is $40 per hour. I do not need to vacuum but I want help her as much as I can . I want ask her to stay at least 3 hours but I feel sorry since it takes 40 minutes to come to my house.

Previous cleaning lady was charging $120 for 2 hours which is $60 per hour.

Since I am retired, I do cleaning by myself too. Fake plants, stove, 4 Japanese dolls glass cases, window glasses, kitchen fan, refrigerator, kitchen cabinet door, sink.., and so on. Endless!!!

Dodger Stadium gets super crowded, so it’s a shame for little kids …—they’d just get jostled around
. I guess it’s a bit of a stretch to try to get in and out of the wildly popular Dodgers games without spending any money and while avoiding the crowds.

When you mention a Wednesday day game, I assume you’re referring to tomorrow, the 17th.

I’ve never $ parked in Lots 13 and 14 of Section 5, but for night games, there’s always a long line starting two and a half hours before the parking lot gates open. I parked in the stadium’s on-site parking lot, ignoring that line. $ If you park in Lot 5, you’ll have quite a walk under the blazing sun, so I wouldn’t recommend it for families with children.
