ニューヨークに来てから7月で1年が過ぎました。来る前に思い描いてたニューヨークの街と、来て住んでからの現実との違いに戸惑っている状況です。
自分がまだ学生(院生)だからだとは思いますが、思っていたよりずっと学校の多い街で、どこに行っても学生だらけなこと。大学にもよるでしょうけれど、学部生でも昼休みにお寿司屋さんにお寿司を食べに行ったり、プール付きのコンドでパーティーなど裕福な家の子息や子女も多いですよね。またそれとは対象的な人たちも多くいて、貧富の差のあまりの激しさに怖くなることが度々ありました。
こちらで知り合った日本人の女性には、50歳を過ぎても独身でいる人も多くて、生活もゆとりがあるとは思えず、他人事とは言え、自分の立場に当てはめてみると、ここで女性ひとり歳を取ってゆくことに不安はないのかと思ってしまいます。60歳を超えても帰れる実家なりがあり、働かなくても良い状況があるのからでしょうか？直接聞けば良いことですが、私には聞く勇気がありませんでした。彼女たちには、何か帰れない理由があるのでしょうか？

私はNYに住んで30年になりますが、仕事も友達にも恵まれている方だと思います。生まれつきのポジティブな態度が大いにそれに役立っているとは思いますが、勿論、日頃努力もしています。日本に帰ろうかなと思ったこともありますが、NYより景気が良いとは思えないし、意味のわからない決まりや伝統に従うつもりがないので現実的には無理があると思います。チャンスをつかもうという態度と努力を続ければ報われる可能性があるのは断然NYの方が多いので。日本人として日本に暮らす方が色々な意味で安全で楽ですよね。のほほんと暮らしたいなら日本がいいと思いますよ。自分の可能性にチャレンジしたいなら絶対にNYの方がやりがいがある。簡単に言えば何かをやりたい、やり遂げたいという気持ちがないのならここにいる意味は無いと思います。
