What I heard was that to change the status to E visa in the US is not that hard, but, since it is visa for management level. When you go back to Japan 2 years later after the E visa gets approved in the US, (since I-94 for E is valid for 2 years only..) You need to have an interview in Japan. If you dont have work experience as a manager, it may be difficult to get the visa approved. Also, it depends on your company size, financial matters. Big companies have some slots for E visa, so, it does not really affect what backgrond you have...Well, this part, I am not too sure about that. I just have heard about it.
Lately, it is getting more difficult to get the E visa.
As to change to a student visa, as long as you have a valid visa (any type), it could be possible to change the status to student in the US.
I may be wrong bit, but, due to nature of my work, I talk to a lot of client companies, students, and lawyers, so, it should be right some part. The best bet is to talk to a lawyer.
Good luck.
