News from the City of Orlando
** August 23, 2024
------------------------------------------------------------
If "reduce, reuse, recycle" is your jam, then this City News edition is for you. We’re getting crafty up in The City Beautiful and want to show you what a little elbow grease and determination can do. While turning toilet paper rolls into snowmen is fun, we have some more practical applications.
Have a bunch of old t-shirts laying around? Turn them into grocery bags (https://www.orlando.gov/Our-Government/Departments-Offices/Public-Works/Streets-and-Stormwater-Division/Keep-Orlando-Beautiful/Request-a-Group-Upcycled-T-Shirt-Bag-Sewing-Workshop?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=efc2b42466-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-efc2b42466-80648119&mc_cid=efc2b42466&mc_eid=UNIQID) ! Not sure what to do with all that cooking grease you have left after making dinner? It’s time to visit one of your local neighborhood centers (https://www.orlando.gov/Trash-Recycling/Food-Waste/Recycle-Your-Cooking-Oil?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=efc2b42466-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-efc2b42466-80648119&mc_cid=efc2b42466&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
Recycling doesn’t only mean putting your soda cans in the bin. Let’s think outside the box on how to take something old and make it new again.
** Here’s your sign to recycle
------------------------------------------------------------
Are you looking forward to all those election signs being gone from the street corners? Us too. Now, through Sunday September 1, election signs from the primary election can be recycled at three different Orlando locations. Starting November 6, following the general election, we’ll be recycling those signs as well.
The metal frames will be recycled locally, and the signs will be transported to NuCycle Energy in Plant City where they will be transformed to NuCycle's Enviro Fuelcubes. 100% of the Enviro Fuelcubes currently being manufactured by NuCycle are used by a large cement manufacturer to generate electricity, replacing coal as a much cleaner energy source!
City of Orlando Collection Locations:
* Orlando Solid Waste – 1028 Woods Avenue, Orlando
* Broadway Methodist Church - 406 East Amelia Street, Orlando
* First Unitarian Church of Orlando - 1901 East Robinson Street, Orlando

** Sprucing up downtown
------------------------------------------------------------
Get ready for some more big changes downtown! Orlando City Council just gave the green light to transform Church Street near the SunRail station into a festival space.
Improvements will begin soon to create a vibrant space for events, and we’re excited to see this project come to life as we continue to make downtown Orlando a must-visit destination.
Guided by the CRA's DTOutlook and Project DTO 2.0, this project reflects our commitment to making downtown a thriving, connected community for residents, employees and visitors alike. Stay tuned for updates!
** Yes, cleaning counts as upcycling
------------------------------------------------------------
Keep Orlando Beautiful’s 2024 Orlando Lakes Cleanup will take place from September 7 to September 28, 2024, in celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day. During last year’s inaugural event we removed over one thousand pounds of litter from our local water bodies – and we are looking to beat that number this year!
The Orlando Lakes Cleanup is not just a cleanup – it is an opportunity to raise awareness about microplastics in our waterways, the importance of reducing and re-using and the connection between our streets, lakes and oceans. Free reusables like metal straws, bags and bottles are provided to all attendees so they can further their waste reduction efforts after the cleanup.
The next event is at Lake Fran on September 7.

** Elevate your coffee experience
------------------------------------------------------------
There are a few simple pleasures in life, like playing with a little kitten or drinking a perfect cup of coffee, that really make life better. David Strauss and his wife Heather know these feelings well and thought Orlando could use a place where we could enjoy those simple things – at the same time – and began their journey to opening The Kitty Beautiful Café in downtown Orlando in 2019.
David and Heather have always been cat people, but owning a cat café is a big pivot from the couple’s original careers. Heather managed an organic co-op business and David had lived half of his nine lives practicing law before adding actor and author to his resume.
But ultimately, the couple wanted to create a space where they could share their love of cats and coffee and opened The Kitty Beautiful. Not only can customers and guests play with adorable cats while sipping their afternoon latte, but the cafe is also a sanctuary for rescued cats awaiting adoption. Since opening in 2019, The Kitty Beautiful has had nearly 800 cats adopted, and satisfied customers leaving with a good coffee, and a new best friend. To visit The Kitty Beautiful, head to 360 State Lane, or check out their website at thekittybeautiful.com.
