Conservation Tip: Removing Invasive Species is Important to Conservation

Invasive species wreak havoc on our environment, economy and health. These non-native plants pose a significant threat as they spread beyond their original introduction points. They outcompete native flora, disrupt ecosystems and can even harm human health.

Some notorious invaders right here in Columbus include:


* *Honeysuckle*: This aggressive plant emits biochemicals that hinder the growth of other plants and lure unsuspecting animals to settle in subpar habitats.
* *Callery pear:* Despite being marketed as self-sterile, it can cross-pollinate with other varieties, leading to unintended consequences.

By removing these non-native plants, you're not just helping our local flora and fauna grow. You're also supporting local wildlife, including pollinators like bees, birds and butterflies which are critical to the natural world. That’s why our Conservation team and volunteers are out removing invasive species from parks and trails. You too can make a difference in your yard – be sure to confirm what kind of play it is so you’re not removing something beneficial! The iNaturalist app, available through your device's official app store or marketplace, is a great way to identify plants and animals.

Experience the Beat at the Cheer, Dance and Step Showcase

Discover a dynamic platform for self-expression and healthy competition through physical movement at the Cheer, Dance and Step Showcase [ https://columbusrecparks.com/wellness/athletics/cheer-dance-and-step/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] on April 20! The event will be hosted at Independence High School, 5175 Refugee Road. Doors open at 10 a.m., and admission is only $5 (children under 6 are free).

The showcase is an excellent opportunity to see if your child is interested in the sport; classes and summer camps are offered at several community centers. Have a Blast at BioBlitz

Join us at the McKnight Outdoor Education Center on Wednesday, May 1 for COSI’s Science Festival BioBlitz! This free event runs from 5-7 p.m., and you’ll be hiking and using the iNaturalist app to record any bugs, birds, trees, flowers and other animals you find. Please wear closed-toe shoes and bring your smartphone to document your findings.
