Your Weekly South City Update | Centennial Way South Grand Opening, City Council Recap and more | September 27, 2024

Mayor's Update     Hello neighbor! We’ve no shortage of opportunities for community here in South City – we have several events coming up, including the grand opening of our new Centennial Way South Park! What once was an empty lot now houses a skate park, bike pump track, workout equipment, outdoor classroom, pollinator garden, and more! Join us on Sunday, September 29 at 10 am – 12 pm for the ribbon-cutting and various forms of playtime!   Have you met Yomu the dragon? Last month we successfully installed Yomu the dragon’s replacement after the original sculpture that suffered several years of corrosion and heavy winds. Yomu was first installed in 2017 after approval by the Cultural Arts Commission. He was named by a young resident after a city-wide naming contest. Yomu means “to read” in Japanese, and referenced the Japanese aesthetic of the dragon, and the proximity to the old Main Library. It’s located at the corner of Westborough Boulevard and West Orange Avenue. Yomu’s replacement is more durable, and has no moving parts susceptible to future damage.   Festa Italiana The California Law Enforcement Columbia Association is proud to present, along with the City of South San Francisco and the Italian American Citizens Club of SSF, Festa Italiana - a free, fun family event celebrating the Italian culture on Sunday, September 29 at Orange Memorial Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Learn More   Save the Date: State of the City on Oct. 1 Come join me and the City Council as we share our annual State of the City. Learn More   Storm Water Trash Capture Devices Project During the summer of 2023, the City embarked on an aggressive program to reduce trash loads entering the municipal storm system. 120 trash capture devices were installed at storm inlets throughout the City. The locations were carefully analyzed and selected to maximize the amount of trash capture. As a result, the City managed to attain a 96% MRP compliance leaving a mere 4% remaining to achieve the 100% goal by summer 2025. Next steps will be to develop a strategy to complete the 100% compliance, which the City is now poised to accomplish by the deadline.
