Your Weekly South City Update | NLC Official Stop, Fall Recreation Classes, and More Summer Events and more | August 2, 2024

  Mayor's Update     Hey neighbor! If there’s one thing that makes me proud about South City, it’s our diverse and vibrant community. Earlier this week, we raised up the flags of Samoa and American Samoa as we celebrated Samoan Heritage Week for the first time. Thanks to everyone who came and celebrated with us!   Congratulations, YSIP Participants! I want to congratulate our future leaders, our Youth Summer Intern Program (YSIP) participants! We had 16 high school summer interns throughout the City learning and supporting several city services. Check out a few of their social media takeovers to learn more about their experience!   South San Francisco recognized by the NLC We are thrilled to be recognized by the National League of Cities (NLC) as one of their official stops on their Centennial Roadshow: 100 Years, 100 Cities. South San Francisco was one of only 100 cities selected nationwide for this honor. It's a testament to our unwavering commitment to diversity and resilience, values that define us and make us stronger together. Read the press release   National Night Out Several neighborhoods are sponsoring National Night Out (NNO) events the evening of Tuesday, August 6. NNO was started as a grass roots crime prevention initiative to bring together law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, and volunteers. It has evolved over the years to become a celebration of neighborhood camaraderie and Public Safety support. Check out the list of events happening this year, and attend a get-together in your neighborhood! All the events will include free food, representatives from the Police and Fire Departments, and a variety of other resources. Participate in National Night Out Represent SSF at 31st Annual Pistahan Parade Join SSF City Councilmembers Flor Nicolas and Mark Nagales, the Pistahan Parade Grand Marshals in San Francisco on August 10. Purchase your “Proud Pinoy” t-shirt when you register. Register here   SSF Receives $28 Million Grant for Affordable Housing In 2022, the City applied for an Infill Infrastructure Grant (IIG) from the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) to support the construction of the infrastructure and affordable housing. The Project includes 800 housing units (of which 158 units will be affordable), publicly accessible open space, a new bridge over Colma Creek connecting Mission Road to Civic Campus Way, more parking spaces for the Library | Parks and Rec Center, a childcare center serving over 75 children, and a market hall with neighborhood serving retail. The City was awarded $28,817,500 and City Council voted to authorize the acceptance of those funds in our most recent council meeting!   UPCOMING SSF & LOCAL EVENTS     New Park at Linden and Pine Thank you to all who participated in the Open House + Listening Session, Pop-Up Event, Merchants' Round Table and provided feedback during the Visioning Phase for the new park at Linden and Pine. Center - Tues., August, 6 Movie Night at Martin Elementary School - Friday, August 16 Open House + Listening Session #2 - Saturday, August 24 Merchants' Round Table #2 - Friday, September 6 ·Concert in the Park - Saturday, September 21 Fall 2024 Recreation Classes Fall registration for classes and aquatics begins soon! Our fall session will run for approximately 14 weeks beginning Monday, September 9 - Sunday, December 15. Please mark your calendars to plan your registrations accordingly: Monday, August 12, 2024: Resident registration begins at 6:00 a.m. online. In-person resident registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Recreation Office located at 901 Civic Campus Way. Monday, August 26, 2024: Non-resident registration begins at 6:00 a.m. online. In-person non-resident registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Recreation Office located at 901 Civic Campus Way. Monday, September 9, 2024: Fall session classes begin. To prepare for your registration date, please create and/or update your accounts online. Preview the Activity Guide   Final Month to Participate in Summer Learning Challenge August is the final month of the Summer Learning Challenge, South City! Turn in your logs for chances to win San Francisco Giants tickets, San Mateo County Parks passes, and a $1,000 scholarship! Stop by the 2nd Floor of the Library | Parks and Recreation or Grand Avene Library to learn more.   You can join a Book Club at the Library? The Book Club meets every third Tuesday in the Community Room on the 2nd floor in the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center at 6 p.m. No registration is required. You are not required to read the book, but be prepared for spoilers! Email harrisp@plsinfo.org for more information on how to participate!   Summer at the Library Our Public Library has plenty of events to keep the summer fun going. View the full calendar here.   Concert in the Park Save the date for the South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department's Concert in the Park: Community Fun Fest on Saturday, September 21! This free event will take place at Orange Memorial Park from 11:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Family and friends of all ages are encouraged to join in the festivities.   Concert in the Park - Invitation for Exhibitor Booths Apply by Friday, August 9 Who can host an exhibitor booth? Any organizations located in/or providing services to South San Francisco can apply. Priority will be granted to City of South San Francisco and affiliated/co-sponsored groups, other government entities, and local nonprofit groups. Due to the setup of the exhibitor booths, no distribution of food or drink to the public will be allowed. Read the Concert in the Park Exhibitor Guidelines. Complete the Concert in the Park Exhibitor Application (by Friday, August 9, 2024. Your application does not guarantee your participation in the event. Participation will be granted on a space available basis, giving priority to City of South San Francisco and affiliated/co-sponsored groups, other government entities, and local nonprofit groups. Applicants will receive confirmation of their participation status by Friday, August 16, 2024. Once accepted, applicants must pay a $50 participation fee.
