El Segundo Takes Flight at LA Tech Week: Connecting Investors with CEOs to Drive Economic Growth

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – (October 15, 2024) Last night, the City of El Segundo, in partnership with Sidebar Summit, hosted an exclusive CEO Roundtable during its inaugural participation in LA Tech Week. The “Lightspeed, SNR Capital, Foley Roundtable” held at Mantis VC in Santa Monica, featured CEOs, elected officials, and visionary thought leaders from the Silicon Valley and El Segundo.

“El Segundo has proven itself as the most important five square miles economically in Southern California, and LA Tech Week underscored this in a powerful way," shared Mayor of El Segundo Drew Boyles, who gave opening remarks at the roundtable. "Yesterday’s kickoff roundtable brought together investors, innovators and founders from across the country, all recognizing the incredible momentum building in El Segundo. With an unparalleled concentration of intellectual capital, a vibrant startup ecosystem, and venture capital investments reaching unprecedented levels, El Segundo is a hotbed for groundbreaking tech innovation.”

The high-profile interactive roundtable ignited inspiring conversations about the next generation of innovation in AI, aerospace, and energy, as well as strategic approaches to private investment opportunities, and government collaborations aimed at bolstering the entrepreneurial ecosystem. The conversation also focused on the future of tech and emerging trends, highlighting El Segundo’s growing reputation as a hub for cutting-edge industries and its thriving startup ecosystem.

The panel last night emphasized the pivotal role geography plays in startup success," shared Chris Pimentel, Mayor Pro Tem and moderator. "El Segundo's central location in L.A. serves as a dynamic epicenter for advancements in technology. We prioritize minimizing bureaucratic barriers, creating a community that’s supportive and actively engaged in helping startups launch and scale."

El Segundo stands out as one of the few South Bay cities actively participating in LA Tech Week, making this CEO Roundtable a pivotal opportunity to showcase the city’s unique role on a regional stage.

CEOs Mark Groden of Skyryse, and Doug Bernauer of Radiant, two game-changing companies based in El Segundo, shined a spotlight on the City's leadership in portable nuclear power solutions and aviation safety technologies, emphasizing the City's status as a regional economic powerhouse; especially, in the tech sector.

"When you’re looking for the talent to ship an aerospace product, something that’s been certified by the FAA, there’s nowhere better in the entire world, in my opinion, than El Segundo, California. Full stop," shared CEO of Skyryse, Mark Groden. "There’s a really diverse group of amenities that El Segundo has to offer that I don’t think you can find anywhere else in a city with such concentration. Working with the City has been absolutely fantastic. From my point of view, I would love it if the state of California would operate more like the City of El Segundo."

Doug Bernauer, CEO of Radiant, shared why the access to talent was a vital factor in choosing to found his company in El Segundo, "It’s about the type of people who want to work on and build the future. The kind of people who love to work in a self-motivated fashion, that don’t mind the risk of a startup. El Segundo is at this cross-section of amazing hardware technology, but also software engineering, and the art scene in L.A. All of that is actually really important in telling the story of the vision you’re trying to create within a company."

Roundtable attendees included 400 registered guests, including executives in venture capital, thought leaders, and founders of highly successful tech startups.
