National Night Out 2023
________________________________________________________________________
nno
Happy Friday Kent!
National Night Out this week was a huge success! The community really showed up with over 60 individual neighborhood events all around Kent.
Our officers, staff and councilmembers had an amazing time driving around vising neighborhoods and connecting with our residents.
This annual event is all about building community by getting to know your neighbors and local law enforcement while enjoying food, games and fun.
It was a great evening and I'm already looking forward to next year!
We have one last Wednesday picnic performance left in our Kent Concert Series, so come on out for some live music and fun. Hope you enjoy this week's update and have a great weekend!
Dana Ralph, Kent Mayor

Council/ELT
Earlier today I met with the Kent City Council and the city's Executive Leadership Team for a special public workshop to discuss housing legislation, the Equity Strategic Plan, ARPA funding and public safety! It was a productive meeting and I am looking forward to sharing more in the future.

We had a great time and good discussion with the White Horse Crossing HOA Thursday night for Drinks in the Driveway. Thanks, Robin, for having us out!

Employee of the Month
________________________________________________________________________
EOM
Julie Stormes is our July Employee of the Month! Julie started working for the Legal department on October 2002 in a temporary intern position and then was hired into a full-time benefitted position in May 2004 as an Assistant City Attorney.
She was reclassed to a Senior Assistant Attorney in 2021 and then she was reclassed again in 2022 into her current position as a Senior Assistant Attorney. Julie assists in planning, organizing, and coordinating the work of prosecution staff with respect to appeals, motions, legislation, and other matters as assigned and serves as a Senior Prosecuting Attorney, managing appeals and legislation impacting criminal prosecution.
Julie is originally from Stockton, California. She lived there until she left for college attending the University of California, Santa Cruz. She received her BA then moved to Seattle a year or so after graduation.
Julie also worked in a few other radio/TV newsrooms, but she says this line of work requires you to be open to moving frequently if you want to advance or get to a particular market, and she didn’t want to leave the Seattle area.
So Julie decided to change career paths and go to law school. She attended Seattle University Law School, graduating with a juris doctor (JD). While in Seattle Universities’ night school she worked as a legal assistant in downtown Seattle.
While attending Seattle University Julie’s spouse, who worked for the City of Kent, went to a training with a couple of the cities former prosecutors. She told them about Julie attending law school and they suggested Julie apply to be a Rule 9 Intern with the city. Julie was a R9 for about a year when she took the bar and was offered a prosecutor position.
Julie lives in Kent so she says she likes being a part of the community she also serves. Julie says she is also impressed by other city employees and how much they care about the city and its residents.
Julie likes working on interesting and often novel projects and issues that come up. She says working in her current position usually means she is asked to provide some level of input when something directly or even tangentially involves the Criminal Division. She says she is part of a group of professionals who have chosen to dedicate themselves to the idea of making a safer community for everybody.
Julie was nominated because she is committed to Kent and gives the best of herself every day. She is diligent, thorough, and a tireless advocate for the safety of our Kent community. She works with integrity in each case she prosecutes.
While she is a tough prosecutor who believes individuals should be held accountable for their actions, she is also compassionate and caring in how she seeks to administer justice, taking into account issues that may contribute to unlawful behavior and seeking to address those underlying issues in the hopes of reducing the likelihood of an individual reoffending.
Most recently, she rearranged her personal travel plans so she could be available to testify on a state legislative bill she had worked significantly on related to illegal street racing, without anyone asking her to do so. In her legislative and appellate work, Julie works across the aisle and consults with the civil attorneys to gain the benefit of their knowledge and experience. She is a true team player in that regard.
While she will never advertise it, Julie has a huge heart, checking in with members of her team who she knows have been undergoing a challenging time. The Legal office is better because Julie is a part of it.
Outside of work Julie hangs with friends, watches movies and likes to travel. She says she wishes she liked the standard NW outdoorsy stuff more. She also likes to hang with her spouse, dogs and cats.
Julie continuously embraces our values, and we celebrate her as July’s Employee of the Month!
