Update: 24-Hour Road Closure on North Mercer Way between 80th Ave S.E. and Island Crest Way as early as May 6

Expect noise, vibrations, and detours for pipe repair work

*As early as May 6,* King County's contractor will begin pipe repair work on North Mercer Way between 80th Avenue Southeast and Island Crest Way. To ensure safety, road closures will be in place on North Mercer Way between 80th Ave S.E. and Island Crest Way and at 81st Ave Southeast and North Mercer Way. This work involves a construction method called open-cut trenching. During open-cut construction, crews sawcut the roadway’s surface, remove asphalt, and dig down to the pipe.

Local access:

Residential access will be maintained. Mercer Isle Condo residents will be able to access their homes from 81st Ave S.E. and Southeast 24th Street.

Detours:

Detours will be in place for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians to allow safe movement around the work area. Detour routes are located on surrounding local streets. This includes 80th Ave S.E., S.E. 27th St, and Island Crest Way south of I-90 and S.E. 26th St, 84th Ave S.E., and S.E. 24th St north of I-90. Please follow all detour signs and travel slowly around the work area.

We understand that these detours are inconvenient. We appreciate your patience as crews work to complete construction as safely as possible. If you have questions about access, please call our construction hotline at 425-305-3578.

This closure is expected to continue through mid-June as crews work to complete the repairs safely and efficiently.

* *

*Please travel slowly through the area and follow all signs, traffic control signals, and directions from crews.*

Why is repair work needed?

Testing the pipe ensures the newly installed conveyance system operates as planned. Pipe testing revealed an issue that needs repairs. Crews are repairing the pipe to make sure the system operates correctly and safely to ensure reliable sewer service for your community.

Plans for final restoration:

When repairs are complete, crews will backfill the roadway and temporarily restore the roadway surface where the pipe was installed. Then, crews will restore all disturbed areas based on permit conditions agreed upon with the City of Mercer Island. Final paving is weather dependent and will be scheduled during the permitted paving window which runs between mid-March and mid-October. A notice with more details will be sent out, and the project website will be updated once final restoration and paving has been scheduled.

What to expect:

* Approved work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
* All work will be performed in the public right-of-way.
* Flaggers will direct local access to the Mercer Isle Condominiums.
* Noise, dust, and vibrations typical of an active construction project.
* Expect intermittent loud noise during jackhammering and saw cutting.
* Expect increased continuous noise while the vacuum truck is in use.

* Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.
* Garbage, recycling, composting, and mail service will be maintained.
* If services are interrupted, please call the project hotline at 425-305-3578.

* Construction schedules can change based on factors such as site conditions, weather, and material availability.
