Our RapidRide J Line project will make it easier and more convenient for you to get around the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown. Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to class at the University of Washington, visiting the doctor, or shopping at local businesses, these upgrades will help you travel faster and more reliably.
As part of the project, we’ll upgrade streets, sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, streetlights, and traffic signals. We’ll also add protected bike lanes and replace the water main on Eastlake Ave E. These upgrades will support our local businesses, make it easier for you to get to housing, and help create safer, more connected neighborhoods for everyone.
Traffic is shifted to the west side for paving on Eastlake Ave E.

*NE 42nd St and NE 43rd St intersection paving *
We continue to pave the intersections of 11th Ave NE with NE 43rd St and NE 42nd St. Our work is taking place on one corner of each intersection at a time, and we expect to complete the corners below by the end of next week. Traffic is detoured around the work areas, and we will keep sidewalks accessible for pedestrians and cyclists.

*NE 43rd St closure*
Starting as soon as Tuesday, June 24, we will close NE 43rd St between 11th and 12th Ave NE. Crews will be demolishing the roadway and then pouring new concrete. This portion of the roadway is expected to remain closed for approximately eight weeks. You can expect noise, dust, and vibrations. Residents and businesses can still access the alleys via NE 42nd St and NE 45th St. We will continue to provide updates as work progresses.

Partial road closure on NE 42nd St.
"Partial road closure on NE 42nd St."
Starting as soon as Monday, June 23, we will close a portion of NE 42nd St between 11th Ave NE and Roosevelt Way NE for approximately three weeks to complete utility work. We will keep 11th Ave NE open and detour traffic around work in the intersection.
Access is permitted on NE 42nd St for those traveling southbound from Roosevelt Way NE and turning left onto NE 42nd St. This option will also be available for UW Medical Center Roosevelt Clinic patient drop-offs. Parking on NE 42nd St will be maintained.
*Water outage on NE 42nd St*
The properties highlighted in yellow will experience a water outage during the day on Saturday, June 28.
"The properties highlighted in yellow will experience a water outage during the day on Saturday, June 28."
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) crews will shut off the water supply on Saturday, June 28, to replace a water line beneath NE 42nd St and 11th Ave NE. The outage is scheduled between 8 AM and 3 PM. The properties affected are marked in yellow on the map above. Construction vehicles will be on-site, so some noise is expected as we carry out this work.
Following the water outage, we will continue to install new drainage infrastructure in this area, requiring us to keep a portion of NE 42nd St between 11th Ave NE and Roosevelt Way NE closed (see map above). You can expect excavation, noise, and vibrations for up to one week.
Please visit SPU's webpage [ https://www.seattle.gov/utilities/neighborhood-projects/water-outages/planning-for-outages?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] for tips on preparing for a water outage. Eastlake Construction
*E Allison St closed between Eastlake Ave E and Harvard Ave E *
Closure on E Allison St between Eastlake Ave E and Harvard Ave E.
"Closure on E Allison St between Eastlake Ave E and Harvard Ave E. "
We have closed E Allison St between Eastlake Ave E and Harvard Ave E to install the new water main. This work will take approximately eight weeks to complete.
During this time, vehicles cannot turn right from northbound Eastlake Ave E to southbound Harvard Ave N. They also cannot turn left from northbound Harvard Ave E to southbound Eastlake Ave E. To access Eastlake Ave E, northbound drivers will need to continue north past the closure and detour using NE 41st St to head back south.
Local access to driveways and alleyways on E Allison St will be available from Harvard Ave E. Please be aware that crews may temporarily block these areas as they complete their work. We will notify impacted properties of any upcoming closures.
*Nightwork at Eastlake Ave E and Fuhrman Ave E*
Crews will install the last section of underground electrical lines at the intersection of Eastlake Ave E and Fuhrman Ave E on the night of June 23. This work will take place at night to minimize impacts on traffic. *Please anticipate nighttime noise as crews work. *
"All our nighttime activities will follow the City of Seattle’s noise variance requirements. For more information about the City’s noise code, please visit their ""website" [ https://www.seattle.gov/sdci/codes/codes-we-enforce-(a-z)/noise-code?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]"."
*Paving on Eastlake Ave E between Fuhrman Ave E and Harvard Ave E*
Traffic is shifted to the west side for paving on Eastlake Ave E.
"Paving on the east side of Eastlake Ave E. "
While we finish installing the underground utilities, we have also started paving on the east side of Eastlake Ave E, between Fuhrman Ave E and Harvard Ave E. This process involves heavy machinery and demolition, so expect loud noise. Traffic will be redirected to the west side of Eastlake Ave E, maintaining one lane for northbound and one for southbound travel. After completing the east side, we will pave the west side using the same steps. Businesses and residents will have access to their driveways, but there may be brief closures while we cross over these areas.
*Electrical installation at E Galer St and E Garfield St*
On the nights of June 26 and 27, we will be working on Eastlake Ave E at the intersections of E Galer St and E Garfield St. Crews will install new electrical lines across each intersection. This work will require trenching in the road to access underground utilities, so you should expect construction noise. We will complete the most disruptive activities before 10 PM and alternate traffic lanes on Eastlake Ave E around the work areas.
Following these nighttime activities, we will continue to install new electrical lines on the east side of the intersections at E Garfield St and E Galer St. During this time, we will close sections of E Galer St and E Garfield St near the work area. However, we will not close these streets at the same time. This work is expected to take up to a week to complete. You can expect dust, noise, and vibrations.
*Water main installation between E Galer St and E Blaine St** *
We continue to reconnect properties to the new water main under Eastlake Ave E between E Galer St and E Blaine St. Over the next week, some properties may experience a short, one-time water outage as we reconnect their services. SPU crews will notify the affected properties on the day of the outage.
*Upcoming road work on Eastlake Ave E and E Garfield St*
Crews prepare the street for new pavement.
"Crews prepare the street for new pavement. "
We will soon move north toward E Garfield St to pave the east side of Eastlake Ave E. This work will involve demolishing the old road, digging several feet deep, filling the trenches with gravel, and pouring new concrete. We will then construct new sidewalks and curbs. You can expect vibrations, noise, and dust for several weeks when we complete this work. Traffic will be shifted to the west side of Eastlake Ave E, and one lane will be maintained in each direction. More information on the impacts and schedule for this work will be available soon.
The properties highlighted in yellow will experience a short water outage during the day on June 16, 17, 18, and 20.
South Lake Union Construction
*Electrical Work at Fairview Ave N and Harrison St*
We had to temporarily pause our work at the Fairview Ave N and Harrison St intersection to resolve several issues we encountered. We expect to return around June 30 to continue the installing electrical lines. This will take approximately two more weeks. To minimize disruptions to traffic and maintain streetcar operations, we are working at night from 7 PM to 5 AM. Please expect pedestrian detours and noise from concrete breaking, excavation, and paving equipment during this time. After finishing this first phase of work, we will pause for several weeks before beginning the second phase.
*Electrical Work on Fairview Ave N between Yale Ave N and Aloha St*
We continue to install electrical lines under Fairview Ave N between Yale Ave N and Aloha St. The work will likely take us through next week. Crews will be working at night starting around 9 PM until 6 AM. This work must be done at night due to tunneling under the streetcar tracks.
