Congratulations to all our Long Beach families that completed their first week of taking their children back to school! We hope that everyone enjoyed their summer break. Don't be sad, there's a lot to look forward to. Like Labor Day weekend! On Labor Day this Monday, Sept. 2, 2024, several City of Long Beach facilities will be closed and some services may be impacted. We have our full holiday schedule below. We also want to take this time to remind you to please celebrate safely. City of Long Beach Facilities and Services Schedule for Labor Day Holiday In observance of Labor Day this Monday, Sept. 2, 2024, several City of Long Beach facilities will be closed and some services may be impacted. Click here Long Beach Celebrates Groundbreaking for New Fire Station 9 Building The City of Long Beach recently celebrated the groundbreaking for the new Long Beach Fire Station 9 facility. The Fire Station 9 Project includes the demolition of the existing building on site and construction of a new 12,779-square-foot, state-of-the-art two-story fire station and redeveloped site. Construction commenced in June 2024 and is expected to be completed towards the end of 2025. Learn more Learn How the Johnson v. Grants Pass Decision Impacts Enforcement in Long Beach On June 28, 2024, the Supreme Court reversal of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision in the case of Johnson v. Grants Pass (9th Cir. 2022) 50 F.4th 787 changes what anti-camping enforcement is allowable under the law. This ruling provides the City with more tools to address public health and public safety in Long Beach. When responding to other requests related to residents experiencing homelessness, the Cityremains committed to leading with compassion and empathy and focusing on services that can resolve homelessness. Homeless Services staff will continue proactive outreach and relationship-building to move people into shelter and housing as quickly as possible. FAQ City of Long Beach Encourages College Students to Participate in New Urban Planning and Design Internship Program Our Economic Development Department is offering a paid internship program focused on fostering collaboration through real-world learning experiences for college students interested in pursuing careers in urban planning and civic engagement. The program is open to students ages 18 to 30 who are currently enrolled in a community college or four-year university program majoring in urban planning, architecture or related fields. Priority will be given to applicants who are residents of Long Beach and those in low-income and underserved communities. Participants must have a reliable mode of transportation. Additional information regarding eligibility and requirements is available on the program webpage. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply online through Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024. Click here   City Launches New Long Beach Vacancy to Vibrancy Interactive Real Estate Map As part of the ongoing effort to expand the City of Long Beach’s business resources portfolio, our Economic Development Department launched the Long Beach Vacancy to Vibrancy Real Estate Map, an interactive mapping tool where business owners, entrepreneurs and prospective businesses can access data on real estate available for lease or purchase throughout Long Beach. This tool was created to provide entrepreneurs and business owners with information to find the most suitable space for their business needs. Learn more City of Long Beach Celebrates 30th Graduating Class of Neighborhood Leadership Program Congratulations to our Community Development Department's Neighborhood Leadership Program’s Class of 2024. The group participated in a free five-month, multilingual program that supports residents in their interest to improve their local neighborhoods. Read more Student and Young Adult Photo Pop-Up Tour – Unlock Your Photography Potential The Port of Long Beach announced a Pop-Up Tour open to photographers who are students or young adults living, working, or actively creating in and around Long Beach! You and a +1 are invited on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to cruise through the Port of Long Beach. (If you’re under 18, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.) Spaces are limited, but the first 75 photographers who sign up will have the opportunity to digitally submit their photos to be featured on Port of Long Beach social media platforms. Plus, photographers will have priority sign-up for the highly anticipated Port Photo Program, a valuable opportunity to showcase your work. Sign up quickly – spaces will fill up fast! RSVP Port of Long Beach & Historical Society of Long Beach Open Workers Exhibit in Time for Labor Day Just in time for Labor Day the Port of Long Beach and the Histroical Society of Long Beach will open, “The Workers’ Harbor – How Labor Built and Shaped the Port of Long Beach” at the #POLB Admin. Building in downtown Long Beach. Opening August 27, the free exhibition brings together historical photos and artifacts to look at the people who made the ports of the San Pedro Bay possible. Click here Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine’s Free After School Programs for Youth Resume August 26 This fall, the City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will once again offer programs to engage youth during after school hours. The After School Programs are for children ages 5 to 12 and will take place at varying times per location, weekdays from Aug. 26 through Dec. 20, 2024. Click here Long Beach Public Library Launches KOALA Quest: 500 Books Before Middle School Reading Challenge The Long Beach Public Library has announced the launch of KOALA Quest: 500 Books Before Middle School, a dynamic reading challenge designed to prepare children ages 6-12 for their middle school journey. Registration begins Monday, Sept. 9, 2024, and this ongoing challenge will continue until each participant completes the goal of reading 500 books. Learn more Long Beach’s Sidewalk to Success to Offer Free Food Carts for Eligible Vendors The City of Long Beach has launched the next phase of its Sidewalk to Success program and is now accepting applications for its food cart giveaway initiative for eligible sidewalk vendors. The Sidewalk to Success program, which provides assistance to achieve compliance while easing the financial burden for small businesses during the first year the City’s Sidewalk Vending Ordinance is in effect, will provide up to 40 free carts to local sidewalk food vendors who meet eligibility requirements. Read more Long Beach Youth Invited to Apply for the City’s Youth Advisory Council The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services is still accepting applications for the Office of Youth Development’s Youth Advisory Council. The council, now in its third year, is a body of 11 young people who help ensure authentic youth-led engagement in the design, oversight and implementation of the Youth and Emerging Adults Strategic Plan, the Measure US Youth Fund, annual Youth Summit and other systems of positive youth development. Learn more Long Beach’s Annual Ranchos Walk Taking Place Saturday, September 14 Save the Date! We will host the 6th Annual Ranchos Walk on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024. The community is invited to join in this unique urban hike experience to explore the trail that links Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos. The 9.4-mile scenic route connects the highest points across Long Beach and Signal Hill, including Reservoir Hill, Longview Point at Willow Springs Park, and Hilltop Park in Signal Hill. Click here City of Long Beach Announces Awardees for ClimateLB Youth Climate Action Fund Microgrant Program The City of Long Beach has announced awardees for the ClimateLB Youth Climate Action Fund Microgrant Program, a new effort that supports youth ages 15-24 in designing, producing and overseeing urgent climate solutions that further the City’s climate action goals. Selected organizations will receive $5,000 in grant funding to support their proposed youth-led reforestation and tree-planting projects, climate education efforts, climate ambassador programs and public art and awareness campaigns. City of Long Beach’s Dia de los Muertos Parade Returns November 2 The City of Long Beach and Office of First District Councilwoman Mary Zendejas proudly present the 2024 Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, Parade – a free, family-friendly celebration of life in remembrance of loved ones who have died. This year’s celebration will include the City’s festive street parade on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Downtown Long Beach, coinciding with an Arte y Ofrendas Festival at Rainbow Lagoon (more information to be announced at a later date), hosted by Grand Parade Día De Los Muertos Inc.
