City of Toronto and MLSE Foundation team up to refurbish the Dixon Park basketball courts and honour Toronto Raptors legend Vince Carter
Today, Mayor Olivia Chow and Councillor Vincent Crisanti (Etobicoke North) cut the ribbon and announced the completion of the $1 million refurbishment of Dixon Park, funded by MLSE Foundation, the charitable arm of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, and supported by Canadian Tire Jumpstart.
Featuring new asphalt, fencing, posts, backboards, improved pathways and seating, this refurbishment has revitalized a popular amenity in one of the City’s beloved parks.
The project also pays tribute to Toronto Raptors legend and 2024 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee Vince Carter, with one of the refurbished courts named after him. Cater’s Embassy of Hope first established this court at Dixon Park in 2003. The other courts are named the “Raptors North Legacy Courts”, celebrating the Raptors’ 30th anniversary.
The refurbishment and revitalization of three basketball courts and two 3v3 pads at Dixon Park is part of the MLSE Foundation's ongoing commitment to growing the game of basketball and providing access to sport and opportunities that lead to success both on and off the court.
This refurbishment also showcases the City’s commitment to enhancing recreational facilities, fostering community engagement, improving public spaces and reducing financial pressures on municipal assets.
The Toronto Raptors have inspired communities across Toronto since 1995, first with their inauguration as the first Canadian NBA team and again in 2019 with their landmark championship win. Through the team’s many years of contributions to City courts and amenities, they continue to serve as a beacon of inspiration for a new generation, encouraging them to reach new heights through community and the game of basketball.
Quotes:
“A refurbished court is more than just a surface; it’s a renewed opportunity for our community to come together and play. We are thrilled to invest in our community’s recreational infrastructure. Investing in our basketball courts means investing in our youth – this is a place where friendships are built, and skills are developed. The refurbishment of the Dixon Park basketball courts is a testament to our commitment to providing quality recreational spaces that foster community engagement and active lifestyles.”
- Mayor Olivia Chow
“Supporting this project is an investment in our community’s future. A well-maintained basketball court brings people together and strengthens our neighborhood bonds.
These upgrades will breathe new life into our basketball programs, encouraging youth participation and promoting teamwork on and off the court.”
- Councillor Vincent Crisanti (Etobicoke North)
Toronto is home to more than three million people whose diversity and experiences make this great city Canada’s leading economic engine and one of the world’s most diverse and livable cities. As the fourth largest city in North America, Toronto is a global leader in technology, finance, film, music, culture, innovation and climate action, and consistently places at the top of international rankings due to investments championed by its government, residents, and businesses.
