FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 6, 2024Indianapolis Department of Public Works highlights their end of Summer Brush Blitz initiativesIndianapolis, IN – On Friday morning, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW), members of AFSCME Local #725, and City-County Councilor Ron Gibson celebrated the Summer 2024 Brush Blitz work conducted to remove overgrown vegetation from key infrastructure areas, including guardrails, signage, and other critical road assets. This proactive effort is designed to improve visibility, enhance road safety, and maintain the city’s infrastructure in neighborhoods across Marion County.

This Brush Blitz initiative addresses areas identified with overgrown vegetation using data compiled by the Mayor’s Action Center (MAC). Overgrown vegetation is a significant public safety concern. In response, Indy DPW has committed resources to address these issues and ensure that all road users—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians—can travel safely and efficiently.

For the past three weeks, ASFCME Local #725 crews have been actively clearing overgrown vegetation in several high-priority areas where overgrowth obstructs visibility, signage, and access to roadways. This morning, the team spent time along the Fall Creek corridor and plan to address other areas in the Devon, Forest Manor, Brendonwood, and surrounding neighborhoods. Last year, DPW cleared over 15 million square feet of brush. Thus far In 2024, DPW Operations has removed over 17 million square feet of brush and conducted over 12,000 hours of work.

“The Brush Blitz is about more than just clearing vegetation,” said Brandon Herget, Director of the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. “It’s about ensuring the safety and well-being of all who use our city’s roads. By addressing these overgrowth issues now, we’re not only improving the current state of our infrastructure but also preventing potential accidents and hazards in the future. It is also a timely reminder of how important consideration of this year’s budget is to continue investing in our DPW workforce.”

“Ensuring the safety of our road users is a top priority, and the Brush Blitz that occur throughout the year are a great example of how we can take actionable steps to achieve that goal,” praised Councilor Ron Gibson, City-County Councilor of District 8.

The Brush Blitz events reflect the City of Indianapolis’ commitment to maintaining safe and well-maintained public spaces.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the Brush Blitz and to reach out to their neighborhood associations, local Councilor, or call the Mayor’s Action Center with any concerns or suggestions regarding overgrown vegetation. The city remains dedicated to ensuring that all neighborhoods benefit from these safety enhancements.
