November 15, 2024 | News from the City of Hermosa Beach

sharon

At its November 12th meeting, City Council recognized Sharon Stine on her retirement after 13 years of dedicated service to the City of Hermosa Beach. Thank you, Sharon, for all your contributions to the Hermosa Beach Police Department.

Here's The Latest

Holiday Parking

Beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving, the City will continue its tradition of offering complementary holiday parking to encourage people to visit, dine and shop locally throughout the holiday season. Visitors may park at red-bagged meters up to the posted time limit at no charge through Christmas Day. The red bags, indicating complementary parking, will be placed on silver meters along Hermosa and Pier Avenues and other commercial areas of the City.  The two-hour or three-hour parking limit will continue to be enforced at these meters to encourage parking space turn-over.

Sand Berm Update

The Department of Beaches and Harbors informed us during a recent meeting that they will not be constructing a sand berm at the Hermosa Beach Pier this winter. As many of you may know, Beaches and Harbor’s annual berm program is designed to protect public resources by acting as barriers against storm surges, preventing high tides and waves from entering facilities and parking lots.

The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, along with the LA County Lifeguard Division, determined the berm isn’t necessary this year due to the beach’s significant natural widening, which offers storm protection. Instead, the County will use heavy equipment to contour the beach and, if needed, employ sandbags to protect storage areas from potential storm impacts.

*Capital Improvement Project (CIP 502) Greenbelt Pedestrian Trail Green Zone" Meter Update*

We are pleased to announce that the City received $529,000 in Measure A grant funds from the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District that will go towards paying for a significant portion of the ongoing construction of the Greenbelt ADA project. This funding will help ensure our Greenbelt’s accessibility and ensure that is easier for people with mobility issues to navigate. This project is being constructed in a phased approach to mitigate impacts to the community. The target date for full project completion is January 2025.

*Capital Improvement Project (CIP 623) Pier Structural Inspection and Evaluation *

You may have noticed recent activity on our beloved Hermosa Beach Pier. The City is currently performing a full above and below water structural inspection to identify future repair needs. This inspection is part of the City’s back to basics approach to maintain our critical infrastructure.

*"Green Zone" Meter Update*

Per our last e-newsletter, we shared that the City recently converted 29 green 15-minute spaces on Pier and Hermosa Avenues to 24-minute metered spaces to promote turnover and support local businesses.  These meters now have a 5-minute grace period to provide brief, complimentary visits to local business for residents and visitors. This feature, available by pressing the green “OK” button on the meter, is limited to green zone spaces to support quick stops for nearby businesses.

*New Trash Cans Installations *

On July 23, 2024, City Council approved the purchase of 130 new trash receptacles. We are happy to report that we are now ready to install over 100 of those receptacles in the downtown area beginning this week. These new steel cans take up less space, are more efficient to service, require less maintenance and look better than their predecessors. The new receptacles also support both trash and recycling, with waste sorted later. Installation will continue over the next few weeks, with temporary “No Parking” signs posted on Pier and Hermosa Avenues as needed.

*Bard Street EV Chargers *

This week Southern California Edison began installing 20 Level 2 EV chargers on Bard Street behind City Hall. This installation will expand the City’s alternative fuel infrastructure in alignment with our Clean Fleet Policy and supports the City’s zero-emission goals in alignment with our Clean Fleet Policy. The project infrastructure is fully funded by Edison’s Charge Ready Program, and the installation process is expected to be complete in 4-6 weeks.

*Thanksgiving Holiday *

The City will observe the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 28th. The Community Center, including outdoor facilities, the Skate Park and tennis courts, will reopen on Friday, November 29th during regular business hours. City Hall will reopen for walk-in services on Monday, December 2nd.

Street sweeping will not be enforced on Thanksgiving or the Friday following Thanksgiving, but all other parking regulations will remain in effect. Trash collection will not take place on Thanksgiving Day, so services rest of that week will be postponed by one day. For example, if your trash is typically picked up on Friday, it will now be picked up on Saturday. As always, the Hermosa Beach Police Department and Public Works Departments will remain available throughout the holidays. You can contact the City with any issues by calling the non-emergency Police Department phone line at (310) 524-2750.
