Happy Friday Kent,

Tuesday night at Kent City Council, we celebrated the retirement of Councilmember Les Thomas.

Les has devoted an incredible 20 years of his life to serving the wonderful people of Kent. We wish him a relaxing retirement spent with family, and friends and happiness.

As we wind down the year, I want to encourage you to stay connected to all things Kent by making sure you're following us on* Facebook [ https://www.facebook.com/CityofKent?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]* and *Instagram [ https://www.instagram.com/cityofkent/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]*.

We post lots of great information about things happening around the city, including programs, services, events and fun opportunities.

I know many residents may be traveling to celebrate the holidays this weekend and into next week, so please remember to stay safe and enjoy your weekend!

Yesterday, along with Mayor Pavone of Renton, I helped Valley Medical Center celebrate the "Sky Breaking" of phase one of the new cancer center at Valley.

Having access to state-of-the-art cancer treatment in South King County is so important to our families. This is going to be such a blessing to so many!

I love their mission - Caring for Our Community Like Family

shop with a cop

Shop with a Cop 2023 was a success! It's always great to see these kids and our Kent Police officers with smiling faces as they race through the store picking out gifts.

We were able to welcome 48 kids this year and help make their holiday a bit more special.

Special thanks to Kent Youth and Family Services and the staff at Target for the continued partnership.

With the holidays right around the corner, I just wanted to encourage you to shop local as we all do that last minute shopping we don't want to admit to.

It's a great way to help support Kent small businesses and our local economy!

You can find all kinds of special and unique gifts locally—and don't forget to grab a bite while you're out!

game of life

Monday morning, Chief Padilla and I helped kick off the annual Game of Life Conference.

It's a daylong conference for Kent middle and high school students to learn and brainstorm about important topics impacting them and their peers.

Thank you to Stacy Judd from our Community Education group and the Kent Police Student Board for putting together this awesome opportunity for our students.

Our Annual Christmas Rush 5K/10K Fun Run and Walk got a little wet, but it did not stop the smiles from all of our participants! Residents and people from all around the region came through to get some exercise in, have fun and celebrate the holidays.

King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer's monthly “Good Eggs” breakfasts are always informative.

On Wednesday, we heard from Judge Sean O’Donnell, Chief Judge for King County’s Unified Family Court who spoke about the King County Superior Court system, important issues before the court, and how A.I. might affect the judicial branch.

Impaired Driving Awareness

________________________________________________________________________

dec

December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. Impaired driving is a serious threat to public safety—and often, without outside intervention, this behavior repeats.

The DUI Court program at the Kent Municipal Court connects offenders with with substance use and mental health disorders to recovery support services.

It's a specialized, therapeutic court program dedicated to changing the behavior of high-risk DUI offenders through intensive treatment and supervision.

The KMC DUI Court program consists of five phases designed to keep the participant alcohol and drug-free in order to rehabilitate and reduce the likelihood of recidivism.

We connect them with the treatment and resources they need so they can be healthy, thriving members of our community. Learn more at *bit.ly/4abOSbC [ https://bit.ly/4abOSbC?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].*
