News from the City of Orlando
** July 26, 2024
------------------------------------------------------------
kids dancing at orlando showcase
Maybe we don’t really need a dance partner, but a lot of what we do as a city involves finding the right partners to help make our services and programs the best they can be for our residents, businesses and visitors. We may not be doing the do-si-do, or the Salsa, but getting things accomplished can sometimes feel like choreographing a classical waltz.

** Getting some help with our Vision Zero plan
------------------------------------------------------------
Great news, Orlando! We're thrilled to announce that the city has been awarded more than $3 MILLION from the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve pedestrian safety. This funding will support the construction of 28 new quick build projects across Orlando, as well as updates to our Vision Zero plan, leading to safer streets, better sidewalks and more walkable neighborhoods.

** Become a volunteer football coach
------------------------------------------------------------
The Athletics Division is seeking youth football coaches for the Fall season. The league offers weekly practices and games that are designed to promote self-confidence, life skills and improve players' fundamentals of football. Registration deadline is July 31, 2024.
Register at orlando.gov/volunteer (https://www.orlando.gov/Community-Programs-Events/Volunteer-for-Orlando-Cares?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=fe08cb3b46-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-fe08cb3b46-80648119&mc_cid=fe08cb3b46&mc_eid=UNIQID)
** Volunteers help our programs succeed
------------------------------------------------------------
We had some fun visitors stop by McQuigg Urban Farm in Parramore to check out our Garden Program!
Congressman Maxwell Frost and Director of AmeriCorps State and National, Sonali Nijhawan had a chance to see firsthand how our AmeriCorps VISTA are inspiring young minds through gardening and sustainability.
Dedicated to creating a connection between students and the environment, the Garden Program is supported largely by volunteers. Since 2012, AmeriCorps VISTAs have been committed to uplifting residents out of poverty, mentoring and tutoring youth, and helping to make Orlando the most sustainable city in the Southeast.
We are so thankful for our AmeriCorps VISTAs, Ashley Francis and Abbey Matusik—their service truly makes a difference in our community!

We're seeking an artist or artist team to collaborate on a public art project, in partnership with various local non-profits with grant funding awarded from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

** Guten Appetit, Orlandoans!
------------------------------------------------------------
Downtown’s newest restaurant, Schmankerl Stub’n, translates to ‘Room of Delicacies.’ Owner and chef, Daniel Gabor made the bold decision in 2020 to move to the United States from Germany to start a new life abroad, providing an opportunity to share his love for traditional German cuisine with our city.
Daniel graduated from the Culinary Institute of America with a bachelor’s degree in food business management and culinary arts, and has since gathered invaluable experience in culinary arts, hospitality and business management. While working an externship at Ocean Prime, Daniel became more familiar with the Orlando area, and began doing research for potential places for him to open his own German restaurant.
Daniel and his staff officially celebrated the grand opening of Schmankerl Stub’n last week, and the reviews are in, and it’s about as authentic as you can get, short of flying to Germany for schnitzel. To visit Schmankerl Stub’n, head to 131 North Orange Avenue, or check out schmankerlstubn.com.
