Happy Veterans Day Weekend, Kent!

I want to thank all of the people in our community, including friends and family, neighbors and loved ones, everyone who has served our country as we head into the weekend.

I also want to thank Councilmembers Michaud, Boyce and Thomas for their service in our military and their continued service on the Kent City Council.

Thank you for your bravery and commitment to our nation and our values.

As always, there's a lot going on around the city! Hope you enjoy this week's update, find it informative, and have a great weekend!

Dana Ralph, Kent Mayor

Just a reminder, check on your storm drains in your neighborhood and clear leaves if you notice blockage. That will help prevent any localized flooding in your area!

It’s also a good time to get your windshield wipers, tires, and emergency kits looked at as we head into wetter and colder weather.

We’ll be publishing our updated 2023 Winter Weather Guide soon to help you out!

*Commander Promotion*

________________________________________________________________________

Tung promotion

Last week, Chief Padilla had the distinct privilege to promote Commander Eric Tung into his new position of Commander.

Commander Tung has had an exceptional career at Kent PD. As a young Patrol Officer, he stepped up to be a member of our Civil Disturbance Unit, (CDU) and volunteered for our Peer Support Team. He became a Field Training Officer, (FTO) and then a generalist K9 handler.

He and his partner Kato worked together for 6 years capturing bad guys on Kent’s streets. Most recently he was the hiring and recruiting Sergeant where he oversaw the most effective hiring campaign that KPD has ever done.

If you have had the privilege to meet him, you would know that he is a hardworking, ethical, and compassionate leader who cares deeply for others. When asked about his favorite part of the job, he stated “seeing our team’s resilience tested and triumph.

“When I think of Eric, the traits that come to mind are intelligent, caring, deep thinker, effective, passionate about helping people and a lifelong learner. For these reasons it is my honor to be promoting him”- Chief Padilla

Congratulations, Commander Tung!

*Salt Air Vista Park: Ribbon Cutting*

________________________________________________________________________

salt air park

We had such beautiful weather for the Grand Opening Celebration of Salt Air Vista Park earlier this week!

Our Parks team completed the renovation earlier this year where it received a full playground replacement, new swings, a renovated lawn area with new irrigation, stormwater upgrades, improvement to the nature trail, the addition of a nature play area and a new drinking fountain with the ability to fill up drinking bottles.

It was so fun having the kids from Parkside Elementary there! When we got ready to cut the ribbon, they not only held the ribbon, they started chanting "CUT THE RIBBON"! Hands down the most enthusiastic ribbon cutting I've ever done!

Fall weather has returned! Beat those cold, rainy mornings with Indoor Park at the Kent Commons Community Center.

The program runs Tuesday-Thursday from 9:30 a.m. -11 a.m. Open to all kids 10 months to 4.5 years of age. Call the Kent Commons at 253-856-5100 for more details.

arbor day

We had a wildly wet Arbor Day event at Morrill Meadows Park on Saturday! Despite the thunder and lightning cutting the fun short, we celebrated our 21st year as a Tree City USA with a dedicated group of volunteers who braved the storm to help staff plant a Chinkapin Oak tree and learned about why we recognize Arbor Day in the Fall.

Thank you to Councilmember Michaud and all the volunteers who joined us!
