Chinatown International District Bookstore Makes Room for More Than Just Books

There is never a bad time to pick up a good book. Maybe that's "...why Mam’s Books, a small Asian American bookstore in the center of Chinatown, feels less like retail and more like a revolution. That it presents like a neighborhood living room is by design, the kind with family photos atop shelves, a couch that’s seen better days, and smiling elders eating noodles in front of the window. Each piece of the shop a little story of its own." Owner, Sokha Dahn is "...setting the pace, establishing certainties in an uncertain world. But, his passion for building consistent community ignited long before Mam’s opened, back when the White Center Library gave him and his siblings a seat, a stack of books, and a space no one hurried them out of."

Seattle Group Hijabi Skaters Helps Muslim Girls Learn to Skateboard and Build Community

It's a Saturday evening in August. Asmaa Bah, 20, and her friend Seline pull a wagon with skateboards, pads, and helmets up to one side of the Seattle Center Skate Plaza. There's no one there, which is perfect. Bah started the group Hijabi Skaters in an attempt to build a community of Muslim girls who skate. They organize drop-in skate sessions and work one-on-one with girls who want to learn how to skate and practice their skills. At the moment, Hijabi Skaters isn't a full-time thing for Bah, but she has a dream of opening her own skate park one day, a place where women skaters, particularly women and girls of color, can come and feel seen and be in community with each other.
