Phinney Neighborhood Association Creates Walkable Gallery with Signal Box Art Project, Wander PhinneyWood

Along the upper spine of Phinney and Greenwood Avenues, once grey, overlooked traffic signal boxes now bring bursts of color, culture, and imagination — each one telling a different story, thanks to the work of 18 local artists. This summer the Phinney Neighborhood Association unveiled their community-led initiative, Wander PhinneyWood. The project, supported by the Neighborhood Matching Fund, invites people to slow down, look around, and discover what makes this community tick.

Indigenous Youth Transform Community Project into Act of 'Rematriation' in Rainier Beach

When two organizations — the yəhaw̓ Indigenous Creatives Collective [ https://southseattleemerald.org/arts-culture/2023/03/06/yehaw-indigenous-creatives-collectives-rainier-beach-land-art-ecology?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] and Sawhorse Revolution [ https://mynorthwest.com/local/sawhorse-revolution-teaching-kids-construction-and-building-community-at-same-time/334678?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] — came together, the idea was to provide an opportunity for young people to design and build something small. But when the work was done, they'd created something larger and more substantial than imagined. They planned a project based on each group's ideas about the importance of young people shaping their own futures and positively impacting their community. The resulting project in upper Rainier Beach [ https://southseattleemerald.org/voices/2025/01/17/opinion-building-an-indigenous-future-in-rainier-beach-sawhorse-and-y%C9%99haw-focus-on-youth?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] involved weekly after-school design meetings during the fall 2024 semester. It concluded in June with the construction of the students' vision: a rematriation welcoming center.

Dare to Dance Dismantles Barriers to Participation in Choreography and Dance

If you can move your body, you can dance. That’s the philosophy of Zheng Wang, dancer, choreographer, and founder and Artistic Director of Dare to Dance Seattle [ https://daretodanceseattle.org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], an organization that has produced an average of one show per year since 2010 by focusing on community and providing opportunities for non-professional dancers to perform on stage. The organization emerged circuitously out of Wang’s experiences with Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and with flash mobs in general.  Dare to Dance Seattle operates on a volunteer-based model, which allows Wang to mount shows without relying on major donations, but it can be difficult. He is now working with his Administrative Director, Cindy Jacobs, to attract more donations and grants.
