This week we hosted a citywide moment of silence to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the tragic events of the 9/11 attacks. Mayor Rex Richardson alongside the Long Beach Police and Fire Departments, held a memorial ceremony to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that tragic moment of history. Our Long Beach City Council approved to adopt the City of Long Beach’s $3.6 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2025 (FY 25). This FY 25 Budget maintains current services while utilizing both one-time and structural resources in a strategic and fiscally prudent way. We have all the details inside this issue. City of Long Beach Held a Moment of Silence in Remembrance of 9/11 Attacks To commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the tragic events of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the City of Long Beach hosted a memorial ceremony on Wednesday, September 11, at 9:11 a.m. to reflect and 'Never Forget.' Our Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson alongside our Police and Fire departments and other City Officials gathered to honor and remember the lives of those who were lost and the bravery of the first responders with a Last Alarm tribute at 9:11 a.m. Watch here Long Beach City Council Adopts Fiscal Year 2025 Budget On Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, the Long Beach City Council voted to adopt the City of Long Beach’s $3.6 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2025 (FY 25). The Adopted FY 25 Budget maintains current services while utilizing both one-time and structural resources in a strategic and fiscally prudent way that avoids adding to the General Fund structural shortfall previously projected at the start of the budget development process. City of Long Beach Invites Community to Attend Open House for Homelessness Strategic Plan Update Community members are invited to attend an Open House event for the City’s Homelessness Strategic Plan Update Initiative. The Open House will take place on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Ronald R. Arias Health Equity Center and is an opportunity for community collaboration and innovation. RSVP Explore Latin American Culture at Long Beach Public Library’s 6th Annual Vida Latina Series Our Long Beach Public Library is bringing back its 6th Annual Vida Latina, taking place from Sept. 17 through Oct. 12, 2024. The Vida Latina series honors Latin American heritage through a dynamic array of free events at all Library locations, showcasing the rich and vibrant culture of Latin American communities. Click here   City of Long Beach Launches Backyard Builders Pilot Program The City of Long Beach is now accepting applications for its Backyard Builders Program (Program). The goal of the pilot program is to incentivize Long Beach homeowners to create an affordable rental unit on their property by providing them with comprehensive assistance for financing, designing, permitting and constructing a new accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Applications will be accepted now through Nov. 30, 2024. The Department was recognized as the Planning Agency of the Year by the Los Angeles section of the American Planning Association (APA). Read more Student and Young Adult Photo Pop-Up Tour – Unlock Your Photography Potential The Port of Long Beach announced a Pop-Up Tour open to photographers who are students or young adults living, working, or actively creating in and around Long Beach! You and a +1 are invited on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to cruise through the Port of Long Beach. (If you’re under 18, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.) Spaces are limited, but the first 75 photographers who sign up will have the opportunity to digitally submit their photos to be featured on Port of Long Beach social media platforms. Plus, photographers will have priority sign-up for the highly anticipated Port Photo Program, a valuable opportunity to showcase your work. Sign up quickly – spaces will fill up fast! RSVP City of Long Beach to Launch Residential Organics Collection Program The City of Long Beach Department of Public Works is taking significant steps towards a greener future by launching a phased rollout of its Residential Organics Collection Program beginning this October. Pursuant to Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), which sets a statewide target to reduce organic material from landfills by 75% and therefore reducing methane emissions from landfills, the City’s Organics Collection Program aligns with state requirements and uplifts local sustainability efforts to reduce waste and improve recycling in Long Beach. Click here Long Beach Seeks Volunteers for 40th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, September 21 Our Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) is inviting the community to get involved and make a positive impact on the local environment by participating in the 40th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, taking place Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024. Register here! Receive FREE Money for Childcare! The Long Beach Early Learning Hub is celebrating its first anniversary by granting childcare tuition for local eligible families! Eligible families with children ages 0-5 may qualify to receive up to $3,600 in childcare tuition. Eligibility varies by family size and income level. Learn more City of Long Beach Launches New Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program The City of Long Beach, in partnership with California Volunteers, Office of the Governor, has announced the launch of its Neighbor-to-Neighbor program. Facilitated by the City’s Office of Climate Action and Sustainability, the program’s mission is to foster connection and build communities that come together and address local needs such as climate action and support underserved populations. Click here City of Long Beach Seeks Community Input on Feasibility of Permitting Cannabis Special Events The City of Long Beach Office of Cannabis Oversight is conducting a feasibility study on permitting temporary cannabis special events in the city. A comprehensive report will be presented to the Long Beach City Council with the feasibility study findings and proposed policy recommendations for permitting temporary cannabis special events. Community members are invited to complete an online survey, available now through Wednesday, Sept. 25, to share their input on the potential types of cannabis special events and potential policy considerations, as well as any concerns. City of Long Beach’s Dia de los Muertos Parade Returns November 2 The City of Long Beach and Office of First District Councilwoman Mary Zendejas proudly present the 2024 Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, Parade – a free, family-friendly celebration of life in remembrance of loved ones who have died. This year’s celebration will include the City’s festive street parade on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Downtown Long Beach, coinciding with an Arte y Ofrendas Festival at Rainbow Lagoon (more information to be announced at a later date), hosted by Grand Parade Día De Los Muertos Inc.
