News from the City of Orlando

** May 31, 2024
------------------------------------------------------------

There may not be an organized storm out in the Atlantic right now, but you know it’s only a matter of time. The scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are telling us this will be an above-normal hurricane season for named storms and we want to make sure you’re not left buying the weird passion fruit-blueberry-orange carbonated water because everything else is already sold out.

Prep now, so later you can sit in your lawn chair sipping your favorite lemon-flavored water while everyone else scrambles to get supplies. There’s really no better feeling than knowing you’re ready for what’s coming. We’re ready, Orlando, are you?
* Make a kit – June 1 – 14, take advantage of the sales tax holiday (https://www.floridadisaster.org/news-media/news/20240529-florida-division-of-emergency-management-encourages-floridians-to-take-advantage-of-floridas-two-disaster-sales-tax-holidays-for-the-2024-atlantic-hurricane-season/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) to help you save money as you prep and restock your hurricane emergency kits. * Check your insurance and floodplain risks (https://www.orlando.gov/Our-Government/Departments-Offices/Public-Works/Engineering/Floodplain-Information?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) – are you in an area that is prone to flooding? Review your insurance policies and assess the flood risks. FYI – if you do get new flood insurance, it takes 30 DAYS to kick in!
* Keep leaves off the street (https://www.orlando.gov/Our-Government/Departments-Offices/Public-Works/Streets-and-Stormwater-Division/Keep-Our-Lakes-Clean/Keep-Leaves-Off-The-Street?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) – clogged storm drains cause flooding. Make sure you take care when doing lawn care not to blow leaves or other yard debris into the streets and storm drains.
* Protect your home – Decide on plastic sheeting vs. sandbags (https://youtu.be/8ewu5I9-FiU?feature=shared&utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) and get window clips (https://youtu.be/68AIW2XcykA?feature=shared&utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) ahead of a storm.

** Safe Streets for All
------------------------------------------------------------

Did you know Orlando has a goal of ZERO traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2040? That's Vision Zero, and we're making it happen through smarter streets. Vision Zero means creating a safe and accessible transportation system for everyone. We're building roads that encourage responsible driving, educating communities on safe practices, and prioritizing areas with high foot traffic, cyclists, and public transit users.

Here are just a few examples from the last year of how we're putting this plan into action:
* On Corrine Drive, a new signalized crosswalk with beacons (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6959878661227331584/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) helps residents and visitors navigate the road safely. This project aligns with our plan to transform Corrine into a complete street, creating a space friendly to cars, bikes, and pedestrians
* Creative Village got a boost in safety with a protected bike lane on Amelia Street (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7085337401199316993/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) . This innovative lane uses recycled plastic separators for high visibility, day or night. Plus, a new bus stop boarder makes catching the bus a breeze.
* We're giving residents a taste of the future with a quick-build bike path on Corrine Drive (https://www.instagram.com/p/CzCNGWKvs7a/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) . This temporary path, built from repurposed parking lane space, lets people experience the benefits of dedicated bike lanes before permanent improvements arrive.
* Safety and art collide! We've added bright and colorful murals at four key intersections (https://www.instagram.com/p/C7jya8OsWns/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) throughout downtown Orlando. These murals do more than beautify the City Beautiful, they serve as a constant reminder to prioritize safety on the road, especially in high-traffic areas.

We're committed to making Orlando's streets safer for everyone (https://www.instagram.com/p/C7mQzwzOnyB/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) .

Do you ever get that itch to just redecorate everything? Let us introduce you to Cathy Sands.

For 20 years, Cathy Sands has been making her customers’ home design dreams come true with her business, Blue Daze Designs. Cathy, artistic by nature, wanted to apply her talent while providing a service to others. As a young professional, Cathy worked for other design companies, but like many entrepreneurs, wanted to be her own boss. She launched her business while working at home, but soon realized the work from home life didn’t provide that in-person human interaction she values so much.

When East End Market was under construction ten years ago, the opportunity arose for Cathy to move into one of the newly renovated workspaces. As Audubon Park Garden District and East End Market grew in popularity, so did Blue Daze Designs. Having developed a love for the neighborhood and becoming an active volunteer and board member for the Main Street district, Cathy was committed to staying in the neighborhood. Now celebrating her 20th year in business, Cathy says there’s nothing more rewarding than hearing her clients say, “this is more than I could have ever imagined,” and the reason she remains passionate about creating spaces her clients look forward to coming home to. To visit Cathy at Blue Daze Designs, head to 3131 Corrine Drive, or go to bluedazedesigns.com (https://bluedazedesigns.com/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=8c2d25aab6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-8c2d25aab6-80648119&mc_cid=8c2d25aab6&mc_eid=UNIQID) for more information.
