Happy NDEAM!

“Access to Good Jobs for All. National Disability Employment Awareness Month.”

National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is officially underway! We at ODEP are excited to spend this month raising awareness and celebrating the workplace contributions of all people with disabilities. We’re especially excited to see how workplaces around the country reaffirm their commitment to disability inclusion. To kick off NDEAM, please read our Assistant Secretary Taryn Williams’ post on the Department of Labor blog—and, while you’re online, don’t forget to tag us on LinkedIn when you share your NDEAM activities. Here’s to advancing access to good jobs for all! [ https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/odep-dol/ ]

JAN’s New “Situations and Solutions” Accommodations Finder

Search the NEW Situations and Solutions Finder at AskJAN.org. Search workplace accommodation scenarios by disability, limitation and occupation.

ODEP’s Job Accommodation Network (JAN) has just launched a new resource: the Situations and Solutions Finder. Users can search through real-life examples of job accommodations that worked for JAN customers across a wide range of occupations, workplaces and industries, such as government agencies, health care, education, manufacturing, service and wholesale/retail sales. The free database contains accommodation scenarios searchable by disability, limitation and occupation. Keep in mind that the Situations and Solutions Finder provides general ideas for accommodations but is not comprehensive and does not give solutions for every unique situation. For specific workplace accommodation guidance, we encourage you to contact JAN directly at askjan.org. [ https://askjan.org/sitsol/ ]

Can Employees Bring Service Animals to Work?

A golden retriever wears a red service dog vest.

Increasingly, people with disabilities are using service animals both on and off the job. Not to be confused with therapy animals that provide emotional support or comfort, service animals are specifically trained to perform certain functions defined under disability law—for people who are visually or hearing impaired, for example, or those with seizure disorders who use dogs to alert them when a seizure is imminent. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the use of a service animal at work may qualify as a reasonable accommodation, but requests must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. ODEP’s Job Accommodation Network (JAN) has relevant guidance for both employers and employees. Accommodating Public Safety Workers

Four uniformed fire fighters sit on the front bumper of a red fire truck.

Public safety workers protect our health, safety and welfare, often working in difficult, sometimes dangerous jobs. Having a disability can, in some cases, make such strenuous work more difficult to perform. For these frontline workers with disabilities, job accommodations can help them carry out their roles safely and effectively. Read the latest article from ODEP’s Job Accommodation Network (JAN) for examples of helpful workplace accommodations, such as team-lifting to distribute weight when transferring patients, wearing toe guards instead of steel-toe shoes, and using digital stethoscopes with accessible numerical readings.
