This museum was established in November 1992 by the late Kinya TANIO. The Western-style clinic built in the early Showa period (early 20th century) was renovated inside while maintaining the exterior, and a new wing was added in 1998 to create a modern atmosphere, attracting much attention with its stylish appearance.
In March 2000, the family of the deceased donated the museum and artworks, and in April 2001, it opened as the Nogata City Art Museum （ Nogata Tanio Art Museum ） In December 2013, the building was registered as a tangible cultural property.
Nogata City is a castle town of the Nogata clan, which flourished as a major city on the Nagasaki Kaido highway since the Edo period. The museum is located at the center of the city. Nogata Saijikan ・ Together with the cultural facilities of Umenity Ogata ・ Library, etc., the museum is a new place for cultural exchange.
