Photos from all of the programs celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Throughout May, the Library is offering a variety of educational and entertaining events in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. All events are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Mountain View Library.
On Wednesday, May 7 [ https://mountainview.libcal.com/event/14188172 ], join us for a fascinating talk about the rich multicultural history of San Jose Japantown, one of three remaining Japantowns in the nation. This regional history discussion will be presented by local artist, photographer and author Curt Fukuda.
Then on Tuesday, May 13 [ https://mountainview.libcal.com/event/14190016 ], Robert V. Ragsac, Sr. and Mel Orpilla from the Filipino American National Historical Society will present a compelling history talk on the deep roots of Filipino Americans in the Bay Area, with a strong focus on the Filipino communities in Vallejo and the “Pinoytown"” "that once thrived within San Jose Chinatown in the 1930’s-1950’s.
Asian Art Museum docent Charita Thakkar will share a virtual art history talk entitled Darshan: The Act of “Seeing” in Hindu Art on Tuesday, May 27 [ https://mountainview.libcal.com/event/14400130 ]. This talk offers a chance to see some of the fabulous depictions of Hindu deities from the Asian Art Museum’s collection. From the ten Avatars of Vishnu and the various forms of Shiva to a host of complex female deities, explore the storied pantheon of Hindu gods and goddesses and the powerful possibilities of darshan.
We invite adult customers to participate in a Chinese calligraphy workshop with professional art instructor Jojo Liu on Wednesday, May 28 [ https://mountainview.libcal.com/event/14337411 ]. The Japanese Community in Mountain View
Photo of the Japanese language school on View Street from 1925
In recognition of AAPI Heritage Month, we invite you to explore the Mountain View History Center's resources on the Japanese community in Mountain View.
Immigrants from Japan eagerly moved to the Santa Clara Valley in the early 20th century and by 1915 a sizeable Japanese community existed in Mountain View. Japanese immigrants and their families contributed to Mountain View's development as an agricultural center, establishing nurseries and cultivating crops, especially berries. Community members founded a Buddhist temple and a Japanese language school, shown in the photo above.
The 1942 evacuation of Japanese and Japanese-descended residents of the west coast on the orders of the federal government scattered Mountain View's Japanese community, many of whom spent the remaining years of the Second World War in the internment camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the war and the re-establishment of Mountain View's Japanese community.
The stories of some of Mountain View's early Japanese residents and their children can be found in the Library's online digital collection of oral history interviews [ https://archive.org/details/mountainviewlibrary?tab=collection&page=2&and%5B%5D=mediatype%3A%22audio%22 ]. Transcriptions and translations of many of these interviews can be found at the History Center in Bittersweet: Memories of Old Mountain View an Oral History, Volume I.
The Mountain View History Center is open on Tuesdays from 1-5 p.m. or by appointment. To make an appointment, please call 650-903-6890 and leave a message.
