The Japan Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the stunning Japanese art collection of American abstract expressionist painter Paul ・ Jenkins ( 1923-2012) and his wife Suzanne ・ Jenkins \1948-2023}. The exhibition will introduce the stunning Japanese art collection of Suzanne Jenkins The works in the exhibition have never been shown together outside of their New York home, studio, and Paris studio, and the Japan Gallery will be the first time they have been shown together.

Jenkins was a renowned painter at the same time as Pollock, Rothko, Motherwell, and others, and is best known for his unconventional paint application and richly colored abstract canvases.

Jenkins had a strong connection with Japan, exhibiting in galleries in Tokyo and Osaka from the 1960s through the 1990s, and his work is in many private and public collections in Japan, including the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, the National Museum of Art, Osaka, the Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, Toyama. His works are in many private and public collections in Japan. During this time, the artist met and became friends with such celebrities as actress Tetsuko Kuroyanagi ( (b. 1933) ).

He was also a well-known artist in Japan, so much so that his image and work were used in a 1973 whiskey commercial, as you can see in the video if you search "Robert Brown commercial Paul ・ Jenkins" on YouTube

This is the first public exhibition of Jenkins' lifelong passion for Japanese art to come full circle. We invite you to view the outstanding collection of Japanese art along with the artist's own collages and paintings, including 12 works by Jenkins and one by his mentor, Yasuo Kuniyoshi.
