** Gas Station Demolition: What's Next?
------------------------------------------------------------
Although there was no East Lansing City Council meeting this week, a decision Council made in August 2024 began to take shape recently.

The gas station at the corner of Abbot Road and Saginaw Street has been demolished. The station, which was first constructed in 1969, adding a car wash in 1975 and two service bays in 1990, is owned by American Gas & Oil / University Marathon. In September 2023, they came before the City's Planning Commission to propose demolition of all existing buildings on the site, reconstruction of a new gas station with convenience store at the rear of the property and addition of five fuel pump islands and a new canopy in front. The next month, the Planning Commission voted 5-1 to recommend approval by City Council.

The East Lansing City Council held a public hearing on Jan. 9, 2024 and on Jan. 23, 2024, Council voted to deny the request. Listen to that discussion from the meeting here (https://youtu.be/XOVH5Orb5QA?t=7224) .

A new proposal that took into consideration the concerns of Council was introduced with the Planning Commission hosting a public hearing in April 2024. Again, the Planning Commission voted to recommend approval to Council; this time in a 6-1 vote. Council held its own public hearing on July 23 (watch here (https://youtu.be/mvJT3TA0GD8?t=4811) ) and on Aug. 13 after additional discussion, Council voted to approve the amended request. Listen to that discussion here (https://youtu.be/bOVdAoJLnRs?t=4134) .

The next meeting of the East Lansing City Council will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4 and the next Planning Commission meeting will be held on Feb. 26. View the meeting agendas once they are posted on the website here (https://cityofeastlansing.civicweb.net/portal/) .

** BIG RECYCLING NEWS!!!!!
------------------------------------------------------------
From all this (above) .... to just this (below)!!!

** Another Long Term Project Has Launched in the City
------------------------------------------------------------

The East Lansing Department of Public Works (DPW) and Environmental Services fired up its new polystyrene densifier this week. East Lansing Environmental Sustainability and Resiliency Manager Cliff Walls calls it "a game-changing piece of recycling equipment." The machine reduces the volume of foam by 90:1, thus a 25 cubic yard roll-off dumpster (top photo) packed with foam has been transformed into just these three compact blocks (second photo).

Why is this a big deal? Polystyrene foam is made up of over 95% air, resulting in transportation being incredibly inefficient. Imagine driving a semi-trailer down the highway that's practically full of air! Thanks to the new densifier, multiple trailer loads of foam can be reduced to a single pallet. Once the City has a stockpile, it will be sold off to be turned into products like crown molding, picture frames and home insulation, further supporting community recycling programs.

Huge thanks to the State of Michigan and EGLE! Their Recycling Infrastructure Grant made these upgrades possible.

Read more about this project here (https://cityofeastlansing.civicweb.net/document/85327/Update%20on%20the%20City%e2%80%99s%20environmental%20programming,.pdf?handle=2B2DB08467EC441A88E5AA91F64A0CA9) from when it was presented to East Lansing City Council on Oct. 18, 2022.

***************

Foam Recycling Reminder: Only drop off polystyrene foam at the DPW facility at 1800 E State Road, NOT in curbside bins! Foam has a different end market and recycling process, making it a major contaminant in regular curbside single-stream collection. Also, packing peanuts, home insulation boards and flexible foam (often used in electronics packaging) are NOT accepted for recycling at the drop-off center. Here’s why:
* Packing peanuts: Many are made from biodegradable starch, not polystyrene, and can contaminate foam loads, however, even polystyrene peanuts cannot be accepted.
* Home insulation boards: These often contain flame retardants, which affect the quality and usability of the densified "ingot."
* Flexible foam: This type of bendy/filmy foam, commonly found in electronics packaging, is a completely different material. Try to find a reuse (such as cushioning fragile items being stored). A general rule is: "If you can break it, we can take it!"
