** Welcome Back, MSU Students
------------------------------------------------------------
They're baaaack... and it's great! Community members can help welcome Michigan State University students to town at ExtravaGRANDza tomorrow night (Saturday, Aug. 24) from 5-8 p.m. in downtown East Lansing. Hosted by the Downtown Management Board and Lansing 5:01, this annual event will feature music, inflatables, a petting zoo (with a unicorn?) and some awesome prizes in the ExtravaGavenger Hunt.

MSU classes begin on Monday, Aug. 26 and the first MSU football season will kickoff with a night game against Florida Atlantic University on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.

** Back to School for East Lansing Students, Too

East Lansing Public Schools go back to the classroom on Wednesday, Aug. 28, with elementary students having a half day. Community members on the east side of the City will be pleased to know that Hagadorn Road will be completely open by the time school starts. The East Lansing Police Department is collecting supplies for students at Marble Elementary School at the ELPD Cadet Desk, 409 Park Lane. Volleyball and cross country for MacDonald Middle School students begins next week. East Lansing High School's Homecoming will be Friday, Sept. 13.

** Summer Sputtering to an End - Last Chance Weekend
------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight (Friday, Aug. 23) The Dangling Participles will bring their indie folk/Americana/jazz/pop sound to downtown East Lansing to perform from 6-8 p.m. at Ann Street Plaza. This is the last concert for Summer 2024 - thanks to everyone who came out for the Summer Concert Series! If tonight doesn't work out, check out the Dang P's (as their fans refer to them) at the East Lansing Farmers Market (ELFM) on Sunday, Sept. 15. The ELFM will continue each Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. through the end of October at Valley Court Park.

This is the last weekend to view the Quilting Divas' exhibit "Punishment or Justice" at the East Lansing Public Art Gallery inside the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. The next exhibit will be a solo show from Gabriel J. Riley, entitled "Happiness & Enjoyment." An opening reception with refreshments will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. This is also the last weekend to view the East Lansing High School AP Art Students' exhibit in the Rotating Art Display along the 400 block of Albert Avenue on the northside of the Division Street Parking Garage downtown. The next exhibit to be featured in the outdoor display space will feature works in collaboration with MSU's Broad Art Museum.

There is still a lot of year left in 2024! Make the most of it by taking a class from the East Lansing Parks, Recreation & Arts department, become an election inspector for the November general election, sign up for or renew a library card or submit an entry in the Community Photo Contest.

The City's Finance Department has received the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the City’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2023. It is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. The report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate the City’s financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read it.

The City's Department of Parks, Recreation & Arts is preparing an update to the Park, Recreation, Open Space and Greenways Plan for 2025-2029. The purpose of the plan is to assess the needs for parks, recreation, open space and greenways as well as identify actions to be taken to improve and maintain these facilities. A five-year plan is also required by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to maintain eligibility for grant funding.

The City's Human Resources Department is seeking applicants for several full- and part-time positions. Among the openings are a chief financial officer, communications specialist, parking and code enforcement supervisor, jail service officer and seasonal openings for coaches, adult school crossing guards and more.
