Proposed Critical Municipal Facilities Project
The City has worked with Ava Community Energy (Ava) (https://avaenergy.org/) , Fremont's electricity provider, to prepare plans and agreements for the installation of solar and battery storage systems at the following City facilities: Fire Station 1 (https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/fire/about-us-mission-responsibilities-goals/fire-stations) , Fire Station 9 (https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/fire/about-us-mission-responsibilities-goals/fire-stations) , the Fremont Family Resource Center (https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/human-services/fremont-family-resource-center) , the Age Well Center at Lake Elizabeth (https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/human-services/age-well-centers) , the Age Well Center at South Fremont (https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/human-services/age-well-centers) , and the City-owned building at 37350 Joseph Street housing the Tri-City Volunteers Food Bank (https://tcvfoodbank.org/) . The facilities would be
part of a new Critical Municipal Facilities Project. The project would add resilience to municipal facilities, allowing them to operate emergency loads using solar and storage technologies during a power grid outage. It would also add clean, locally-produced power to the grid, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing savings on utility costs to the City. The project would be financed through a power purchase agreement between the City and Ava. The project is an implementation action of the City's updated Climate Action Plan (https://www.fremont.gov/climateactionplan) and Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The Fremont City Council will consider approval of the project on Tuesday, December 3. The meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 3300 Capitol Avenue. The meeting will also be held virtually via Zoom. The agenda will be available online at city.fremont.gov/agendacenter no later than Friday, November 29 at 5:00 p.m. It will include a link to a staff report for more information and instructions on how to participate and provide public comment.
For questions or more information, contact Kranti Kapur, Sustainability Coordinator, at 510-494-4519 or by email (mailto:kkapur@fremont.gov) .

America Recycles Day
America Recycles Day (https://kab.org/our-signature-programs/america-recycles-day/) , a Keep America Beautiful initiative, is a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting recycling across the country. Every year on November 15, we celebrate by promoting recycling and encouraging our community to recycle right. Check out the five recycling myths below that we're debunking to help educate our community. Thanks to everyone who is already doing their part to recycle right!
1. Someone else will sort through my waste bins and containers if I don’t sort my materials properly.
FALSE: Republic Services collects waste from more than 230,000 residents and 2,000 businesses every day. Recycling bins and containers are sorted by humans and machines at the Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station. Garbage bins and containers are not sorted. Anything in these containers goes directly to the landfill without being opened or sorted.
2. Paper towels, paper plates, and paper cups belong in recycling bins and containers because they are made of paper.
FALSE: Paper towels, cups, and plates are not suitable for recycling. These materials should be placed in the green organics/compost bin or container for composting. These items are already made from paper fibers that have been recycled. By the time they become towels, cups, and plates, the fibers are not able to be recycled any further and should be composted.
3. Tossing food scraps in garbage bins and containers is acceptable since the scraps will go back into the soil after being dumped into the landfill.
FALSE: Food scraps, plant debris, and other organic materials placed in the garbage stay trapped in the landfill without oxygen and water. When these materials break down without oxygen, they release methane into the air and that contributes to climate change.
4. Styrofoam™ can be recycled.
FALSE: Styrofoam™ cannot be recycled in Fremont. All styrofoam™ must be placed in garbage bins and containers, whether it’s packing material like peanuts, cups/plates, or solid blocks of styrofoam™. Fremont restaurants cannot use styrofoam™ containers for takeout.
5. Plastic bags are easily recycled.
FALSE: Since 2018, Fremont no longer accepts common household plastic bags in recycle bins and containers due to changes in recycling markets. Plastic bags now belong in the garbage.

Reduce Waste This Holiday Season
Did you know that between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, more food goes to waste than any other time of year? Don’t worry. We have some information that can help.
StopWaste is sharing tips for (https://stopfoodwaste.org/tips/plan/holiday-dinner-planning) holiday dinner planning (https://stopfoodwaste.org/tips/plan/holiday-dinner-planning) . Learn some simple ways you can celebrate without the waste.
When you do have food scraps and expired leftovers, remember to toss them into your green compost bin. This helps create compost, a valuable resource that farmers, landscapers, and gardeners can use to grow healthy food and reduce greenhouse gases. For a reminder of what’s acceptable for your green bin, check out the City’s Composting Guide (https://city.fremont.gov/composting) . Then, take action on My Climate Ready Fremont (https://myclimatereadyfremont.gov/actions/3572) !
To start composting right from your kitchen, simply gather your food scraps and soiled paper items and then toss them into your green bin. Free countertop compost pails are available from Republic Services by completing an online form (https://www.fremont.gov/Home/Components/FormBuilder/FormBuilder/f8867c35698d46caa53ac6d6205216c0/66) . If you're hosting a holiday gathering, don't forget to have composting and recycling bins easily accessible for your guests.
By doing your part to reduce food waste, you can help create a climate ready Fremont!
