We are wishing everyone a fun, healthy and most importantly safe holiday season. No matter how you celebrate, the City of Long Beach is offering some tips to ensure an enjoyable, safe and hazard-free holiday season for all. Please note that various City buildings will be closed on Christmas and New Year's Day. Take a look at our holiday schedule below. We are also encouraging the community to participate in our Treecycling program, which provides Long Beach residents with 12 convenient drop-off locations for disposal of live holiday trees free of charge from Dec. 26, 2023, through Jan. 12, 2024. This week we experienced our first significant rain of the winter season and we are advising recreational swimming areas to be avoided for three days following the end of a rainstorm. City of Long Beach Encourages Residents to Celebrate Safely This Holiday Season The holiday season is a time for joyous celebrations, beloved traditions, and long-awaited gatherings with family and friends. While everyone should experience the joy and warmth of holiday festivities, safety should always remain a priority. No matter how you celebrate, the City of Long Beach is offering the tips to ensure an enjoyable, safe and hazard-free holiday season for all. Click here City Issues Rain Advisory Due to Recent Showers Long Beach City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis issued a rain advisory for recreational beaches and bays in the City of Long Beach following the rain experienced in the last 24 hours. After any significant rainfall, unhealthy conditions may result from increased runoff from storm drain outlets and rivers, which eventually reach the City’s beaches. Recreational swimming areas should be avoided for three days following the end of a rainstorm. This advisory will be extended if the rain continues. Click here Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson Hosts State of the City Address Tuesday, January 9, 2024 Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson will deliver the 2024 State of the City Address at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024, in the Terrace Theater. The 2024 address will commence with an inaugural “Youth State of the City” highlighting Long Beach Youth. The Youth State of the City will feature remarks by youth leaders overviewing the City's inaugural Youth Advocacy Day, Youth Participatory Budgeting, the Annual Youth Festival, the Youth Advisory Council, and other youth-centered projects for the upcoming year. Click here April Walker Officially Appointed as Long Beach’s New Assistant City Manager During the Dec. 12, 2023, meeting, the Long Beach City Council approved to ratify the City Manager’s appointment of April Walker as the City of Long Beach’s new Assistant City Manager. Ms. Walker, who currently serves as the City’s Administrative Deputy City Manager, will begin her new role as Assistant City Manager on Dec. 31, 2023. Read more City of Long Beach Invites Public to Share Their Priorities for the 2025 City Budget at Upcoming Community Meetings The City of Long Beach invites the community to participate in the City’s fiscal year 2025 budget development process by sharing their service priorities at one of the upcoming community budget meetings or by completing the Long Beach Budget Priority Survey, available Jan. 2, 2024. Learn more Long Beach’s Multi-Service Center Serving as City’s Inclement Weather Shelter for People Experiencing Homelessness This Winter We will utilize our Multi-Service Center to serve as an overnight Inclement Weather Shelter for people experiencing homelessness during the winter months. We will activate the emergency shelter site during extreme weather conditions to provide temporary low-barrier, safe and supportive emergency shelter so that individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness can escape severe cold and wet weather conditions. Click here Long Beach Launches ‘Season of Giving’ Donation Series to Support People Experiencing Homelessness During the Fall and Winter Seasons We have launched our Season of Giving donation series to encourage the local community to make someone’s holiday season bright by volunteering their time or contributing physical or monetary donations to support people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach. Donations received during Season of Giving will help support the City’s ongoing efforts in providing critical, everyday essentials for people experiencing homelessness. Items will be distributed throughout the holiday and winter seasons. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more City Continues to Accept Applications for Visual Improvement Program Grant The application for the Visual Improvement Program (VIP) Grant is still available! This will support local businesses impacted by crime and vandalism on or after October 1, 2022. Eligible businesses can receive $1,500 to cover storefront repairs, boarding costs, insurance deductibles and business operating expenses. Read more Protect Your Family and Yourself From Getting Sick This Winter A yearly flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses. Everyone six months and older should get an annual flu vaccine. Click here to view our flu vaccine clinics. At this time, the Health Department also offers free COVID-19 vaccines to individuals 19 and older without health insurance or who are underinsured at various locations in Long Beach through the CDC's Bridge Access Program. The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) announced today it has received a $326,477 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety The one-year grant will continue and expand the Health Department’s Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention Division’s Walk and Roll Long Beach Program, which focuses on improving pedestrian safety; promoting safe streets; and reducing preventable injuries and deaths that result from collisions that involve pedestrians and cyclists. Read more City of Long Beach Named One of Nation’s Visionary Digital Inclusion Trailblazers The City of Long Beach was named a 2023 Visionary Digital Inclusion Trailblazer by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance, according to a Dec. 13 announcement. We were recognized for our continued efforts to close the digital divide. As the pandemic demonstrated, digital inclusion – access to affordable high-speed internet, devices and digital skills training – is essential to participating and thriving in today’s world. Recognizing the ongoing needs of the community, we did not stop digital inclusion efforts at the end of the pandemic. Learn more Long Beach Pledge Guaranteed Income Pilot Program to Expand with Second Cohort In January, the City of Long Beach will open applications to expand our guaranteed income pilot program, known as the Long Beach Pledge, to include a second cohort of 200 additionally funded households. This expansion will be available to households with children living under the federal poverty level in five Long Beach zip codes. Those selected for the Long Beach Pledge will receive $500 a month for 12 months. Click here Winter Break Mobile Recess Program Available for Youth Ages Five Through 14 Kids ages five through 14 can have fun with physical fitness, games and arts & crafts on weekdays between December 26 and January 5 from noon – 5 p.m. Closed January 1, 2024. Participants must register on site during program hours. Click here Long Beach to Offer Free Winter Fun Days Program for Youth During Winter School Break Our Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will offer free extended supervised recreation programs for youth over the winter school break from Dec. 26 through 29, 2023, and Jan. 2 through 5, 2024. Youth may come and go at their own discretion and PRM staff will be on-site to lead a variety of recreational activities from noon to 5 p.m. at parks throughout Long Beach. Available for those ages 5 through 12, youth can enjoy free games, crafts, sports tournaments, field trips and holiday celebrations. Click here Long Beach Airport Marks Centennial with Historic Report on Local Aviation History With a storied aviation history that goes beyond its 100 years, Long Beach Airport (LGB) released a centennial anniversary historic report that highlights LGB’s most significant milestones and reveals some of the lesser-known stories of the oldest municipal airport in California. The report was commissioned through the nonprofit Historical Society of Long Beach and was written by Dr. Alison Rose Jefferson and Dr. Philip S. Hart. Jefferson, the project leader, is an award-winning author and historian who has worked extensively across Los Angeles and Southern California to elucidate and re-center the Black experience in American history.
